After many days of reading and deliberation I have opted to go down the LPG route. Reason being I heard diesel cars to have issues with DPF's and petrol cars just not giving me the best MPG for my needs.

I do around 20K a year, mainly motorway mileage but I'm looking for advise on which are the best systems out there. I hear BRC and PRINS are the best.

Then comes the question of which car is most suitable. I hear direct injection is bad, but i'm looking for a mid range executive car.

So choices being Merc c220 / Bmw 3 or 5/ Audi A4 / maybe a lexus IS

Are LPG systems dependant on what car I choose?

Any help will be most helpfull and appreciated.

You'll find most of the European manufacturers are using direct injection these days. How old are you looking at?

I wouldn't get too tied up in badges (as with cars a well marketed name may not be the best or most reliable) maybe ask your chosen installer, a reputable converter of long standing won't be misadvising you.

I don't know what system my installer used on my MB, all i know is it was made in Poland it works faultlessly and the car runs smoother on gas than it does on petrol, i'll use him again for my next conversion.

if you dont mind me asking, which garage did you use for the LPG installation?

I do hear about valve seat recession on some cars, this is why I was thinking down the line of GErman cars mainly for the engine build quality. OR are japanese cars any better?

i.e. Honda Accords? all i'm trying to avoid is long term issues like i mentioned.

Thanks again for your input.

I used a small out of the way garage that specialises in maintaining classic cars, its Finedon Classic Cars in Finedon Northamptonshire.

Very happy to recommend them, you are not a nuisance once they've had your dosh either.

One thing i would suggest is to try and get an installer within reasonable travelling distance, the system will need recalibrating at least once after a few weeks or months and will require an annual service, my service cost me very little as the filter wasn't contaminated at all and Joe the Man doesn't grasp your money like a main dealer..;)

I have heard good things about the converter in Knebworth Herts too, and several others.

Yeah Honda Accords car are good recommendation.

Playing devil's advocate here, but if you drive 20K per year and it's mostly on motorways, those are ideal conditions for avoiding DPF problems on diesel cars (and DMF problems, too, for that matter).

Also, an LPG conversion may work very well on certain cars, and not on others, depending on the installer, the specific system used, etc. As pointed out above, even in ideal circumstances with a good installer, it's not a 'fit and forget' solution.

This is strictly my 10p worth, but judging from the type of intended usage you've described, LPG seems a bigger gamble than just buying a diesel.

Of course modifying the fuel delivery system of your car is going to be a bigger gamble than staying with the factory designed one. But once people become aware of certain well-known acronyms, they won't settle until they've found a problem that they haven't heard of!

The LPG system I had in the VW Jetta the old golf model came from Italy.

There are different system and some cars run better on LPG than others.

Have a word with a LPG installer Gordon pointed you to the right direction.

Thanks guys for your input, I understand that diesel maybe better as I do a fair few miles on the motorway. But i'm changing jobs soon, so the miles i do in travelling may decrease very soon.

So going doing the LPG route gives me that flexibility and not worrying about DPF's if i do shorter distances.

I think I will phone around a few installers and ask which would be the best car / lpg system to go for.

Thanks

Lpg systems have been out for many years.Lots' of drivers on the continent use the system.Populair in Holland with many drivers and they have to pay extra tax so most of the drivers do a high mileage.Good luck.

I had a Lada 1600 converted to LPG in the mid 1980s - the system was Landi-Hartog, and it was excellent. A subsequent move to rear engined Skodas meant that LPG was no longer an option. I am still a Skoda driver, and am considering LPG for my next car. Surprisingly, Skoda positively discourages LPG conversions..... or at least they do in the UK. But, for example, in Hungary, Skodas can be purchased from new ready converted for LPG.

Which make me think that the low take up for LPG in the UK has little do with its undoubted financial and environmental benefits (for the owner) and a lot to do with the financial interetss of manufacturers and the petrol/diesel refiners and retailers.
