Adding the washers would have made the clutch cable tighter. Removing them should make it a bit slacker.
I have an old AX 1.1 with standard clutch, (similar to yours). It is manual adjustment and I always a llow a bit of free play on the cable to ensure the clutch is fully released.

Hi Quicksilver, This one is an automatic clutch cable...I'm still none the wiser how they work tbh.
The adding and subtracting length, would've made a difference on a manula one ...but i t didn't do anything at all on mine..which I found out after all the faffing about.
Still, you live and learn :)

Thank Collos25, It is one of those terms I thought I'd better check. :) Cheers Liam

That's at the bottom of its travel i.e. you have to push the pedal almost right to the floor. Ignore what I said previously, yes that is a cable adjuster problem. You may be able to take some slack up on the clutch lever end, washers are not thick enough though, you need probably about half an inch or more, What I have done in the past is to get a nut, cut a slot in the side with a hacksaw, and slip it over the cable, it needs to be a fairly tight fit so it won't fall off, you could use more than one if necessary.
I don't think you can repair the adjuster you will need to fit a new cable.

lol Peter, I am confusing myself now :)
My language was vague in the last posts, ....so I'll try again :)
I push the clutch to the floor & change gear (no problems and it goes in gear, half way down)
...but I have to lift my foot almost off the pedal, for the clutch to bite. ie the clutch is almost in its resting position when the gears engage.
Sorry for all the confusion Peter .
I will have another go with the washers/nuts ...cheers :)
Thanks Liam

Have you stuck your head under the dash to see how the adjuster mechanism works?
|
Not yet Chris :) ...but it will be on my "to do" list
Cheers Liam

Forget the second post and revert to the first one then.

Thanks Peter :)
Tonight, after having the car a couple of days, and only doing 150 miles, a strange wobbly noise started coming from the front left side.
Having a look underneath, there is grease all over the inner wheel and on the lower arm. I can't feel a split in the CV rubber, but I will have a proper look tomorrow.
(This is after I gave it a wipe with a rag) i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/106%...g
Looking on the bright side, this is kinda forcing me to have a go at doing the clutch myself, and I could swap the driveshaft as part of it.
Cheers Liam

ps, as a botchit, I may cut the bigger clip off the CV gaitor, fill inside with grease and then put a jubilee clip back on. Hopefully, for £10 worth of parts, the CV joint may last a month or two longer.

I don't think I'd fit a Qing Ting clutch unless I really enjoyed repeatedly dismantling things.
I suggest you check out a local motor factors. They may charge a little more, but they'll supply the trade with quality parts.
I avoid Halfords.

Good adice there Tom, thanks.
I shall price them up & see
Cheers Liam .

Try carparts4less.co.uk - Euro Car Parts by another name.

I've never heard of Transmech, wonder if it's bought in from Qing Ting?
If you're determined to go for the cheapest, then you'll soon find out why it's cheap!

Neither have I, but they have LUK and Valeo for around £60. If you only want to do the job the once, I'd seriously consider spending the extra.

Thanks guys, This car was £400, with 8 mths mot left. I am just making do atm, finances are tight, but will improve in the new few months.
Later, I may get another diesel a 106 (which is what I have just had, 65-70mpg) or a 306 diesel (prob same mpg as the 1.1 petrol, cheap 2nd hand, and better for motorway driving. I am/was doing 500 miles a week travelling for work.)
I think if the clutch or driveshaft is near the end, I'll put the car in for an mot (£25 around here) and then decide whether to botch it with the cheapest ( just to get by) or is if passes (and I doubt it , tbh) I'll go for the better parts. (The difference is price is only about £60 for the clutch and the driveshaft £110 compared to £50)
Time will tell.... I have only had it 3 days... lets see how it behaves, and what the mpg is like !
Cheers all Liam ps LUK and Valeo...I shall make a note , thanks again Chris
pps Do Q-Drive have a bit of a bad rep? www.carparts4less.co.uk/driveshaft ...are the ebay ones any worse, at half the price?

Sorry, I can't comment on the quality of the driveshaft. But bangernomics is all about knowing when you are throwing good money after bad. Unless you have a crystal ball it's all down to luck. Agree with you that the cheap parts may be OK if you are just looking for the car to see you through the next few months. The other point though with budget parts is the fit, or lack of. Things sometimes don't quite line up like they do with OE. But then you have to cut your cloth.......
Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Just an update, incase it helps anyone....
My clutch started to slip a bit tonight, so I had a tinker...
I was going to swap the automatic clutch cable...but it did seem fine, as when I adjusted it, (by adding to its length) the bite point stayed the same...
using a bike seat stem, temporarily...(as it was very easy to remove) i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Clut...g
the clutch was pushed in, via a pole and bungies i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Clut...g
and held in place, with bungies too i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Clut...g
After a bit of thought, I realised that the clutch arm wasn't pulling back much, so I bungied some more...and now it grips fine :) i103.photobucket.com/albums/m147/liammcl_2006/Clut...g
I dunno if it's a fix, but I hope to eek oput some more miles ! I will probably try a spring instead of the bungies.....
Cheers Liam
