Peugeot 206 GT - Use of electric folding door mirrors - MauriceMinor

My current car is the first I have owned with electric folding door mirrors. Given that the majority of drivers clearly have no idea as to how to adjust the height of their car beams I am frequently distracted by vehicles behind me when driving at night. The option of being able to fold in the mirrors is excellent but I am concerned as to whether it is legal to do so. Can anyone clarify the position ?

Reg 33 sets out requirements for mirrors on vehicles including exemptions. At 33(1) there is a table showing the various types of mirrors) required by different vehicles. 33(4) states requirements re stability and visibility and that of the driver to adjust.

enjoy.

It used to be so simple. I iinternal rear bview and one on the offside (overtaker)

No it's not legal - recent cars are required to have a driver's door mirror - if you fold it in then effectively you have no door mirror.

What you can do legally, but not particularly a good idea, is to adjust the mirror glass downwards so that you don't see the lights!

The majority of drivers will assume that the factory or dealer have adjusted their lights correctly.

I wouldn't be so sure! While an MOT able or needed item is required to work, puting it in a position where it can't ought not be against the law. I'm pretty sure some cars park with the mirrors folded in, and if on the public highway - this would also be illegal.

I'd not worry, it would be an amazingly pedantic and well informed police officer that took an interest - probably one who was throwing the book at you for failing the attitude test.

I always thought electric folding mirrors were for convenience for when parked up of for getting in and out of a 'modern' tight garage. I didn't realise they were also made for not being able to see behind you whilst driving at night...

I appreciate what you mean about not seeing behind you at night but if someones poorly adjusted lights distract you from concentrating and seeing what is infront of you then folding the mirrors in is I feel the lesser of the evils

If you've got folding mirrors (that you can fold when moving - I've never seen that before), then aren't they electrically adjustable, so you can adjust them down to avoid dazzle?

folding mirrors (that you can fold when moving - I've never seen that before)

They don't all fold in/out based on ignition switch off/on - mine aren't automatic so there's a button on the door - I do use it on the move in very narrow roads - to avoid it being belted by oncoming traffic.
