Scraping an S40 2.0D

I posted in another post about my injector problems on a 2.0D

My cars done 186,000 miles. We buy any cars reckoned £1250 which they will probably barter down to somewhere around £1000

AA tred to fix it withou success (in limp mode) so took in it to main dealer in Guildford.

They wanted £180 just for diagnostic £140 to fit new battery.

I have error code reader which gave ECM1203 ESM1202 and ECM1213 which are injector errors. I could find too much about them on net.
Dealer reckoned once £180 diagnostic it would need 1 or 2 injectors at £400 a pop. All figures are plus VAT.

if it's just the one injector that £864 and for two it's £1344

Would you take a gamble and get it fixed or cut your losses. It's scrap value is £160

It doesn't seem right to scrap it as when it works it's OK but it's a lot of miles and soemthing else could go wrong easily enough.

Stop taking it to a dealer and find a good local garage, the dealer will just rip you off. His instructions are to try and remove all old or ugly examples of the marque from the road, and Mercedes subsidises him to do so.

Why on earth would the OP be taking his Volvo to a Merc dealer.

Not all dealer are robbers.

Not all dealer are robbers.

I beg to differ!! They've all got fins that would shame a great white. And I wouldn't trust most to service a walking stick!! the lack of investment into proper mechanical training and woeful pay for 'technicians' means............well, you know what you get when you pay peanuts.

There are all sorts of independants specialising in just a few makes all across the land. It surely can't be too hard to find an indy Volvo specialist within striking distance?? Try and find somewhere run by a proper 'motor engineer'.

Hi.
My garage charges £40 for a diagnostic check ,£180 is a ludicrous price ,a battery would cost about £60 from good accessory shops .

Before you scrap the car , it could be worth your while to buy reconditioned injectors from e bay .Ive bought them in the past for less than £100.They worked fine .

If you use a good local garage as suggested and buy spares at the right price ,your Volvo should be good for a few more miles .

Hi thanks for the replies. I have managed to sort this out myself. I have a code reader and one of the errors was glow plugs. The injectors and glow plugs are on the same circuit so a glow plug error can upset the injector circuity. Anyway I disconnected the glow plug fuse and reset all errors and hey presto all good car running not even in limp mode.

I did feel quite pleased about this really as scrapping the car didn't seem right at all. At the Volvo prices it was touch and go though, and it seems they were barking up the wrong tree with injector replacement. I suspect I would have had to have new injectors and then new glow plugs from them to get it working. This would definately have been more work than the car was worth. Also original battery fine now just overnight trickle charge was good enough.

I don't think I will darken the Volvo dealers doors again. Hopefully not anyway.

Thanks again for your replies. Glad I persisted in trying to fix it.

Before it breaks again, do some homework and find yourself a good independent specialist. That way you won't be rushed into going to the nearest garage just to get it fixed asap.

You should only scrap your car when you find it of no use because why you should scrap your car when they can be helpful to you in many ways. So just don't send it for scrapping until and unless you find it completely of no use. I've also scrapped my car before some time because i met with an accident and my car was totally damaged luckyly i was not injured that much.

Agree with the find a good indies idea and get it fixed. Repairing a car has to be cheaper most times. When we get a new/newer car it's not long before something needs doing to that. 'Sorry sir, it's wear and tear so the warranty dosen,t apply' had injectors done on my 9 year old V70 and so far so good after 9 months.
