Volvo V40 - "Super bright" halogen headlights - sierra1991

Hi all,

I've got a 1998 Volvo V40 and I'm thinking of upgrading the headlight bulbs to these newer "90% brighter" halogen bulbs. The wife has has been complaining the ours barely appear to be on at all in comparison to a lot of cars these days. I agree with her. Ours are like an old torch with weak batteries in comparison with other cars. Can't see much at all on unlit roads without using the main beams. (The car passed its MOT last month and and the weight vs headlight height switch is set correctly)

However I too get irritated by oncoming cars that seem to have ridiculously bright lights, so my question is, am I about to join the annoying people if I buy some?... or is just cars that have the high end xenon gas bulbs (HID ??) that are the offenders?

Should be no problem as long as your headlights are correctly aligned

We've used brighter bulbs of varying percentages in our cars since approx 2000, and find them much better than the OE bulbs.

Depending on the bulb fitment, Osram Nightbreaker Plus +90% or Philips X-treme Power/Vision bulbs (100% brighter) do best in tests (eg Auto Express). Amazon are often the cheapest for these bulbs: Osram Nightbreaker Plus +90% are approx 13 pounds incl postage in H4 or H7 fitments; Philips X-treme Power/Vision £15.94 for H4's and £19.49 for H7's.

On a car like yours with properly aimed headlights, brighter bulbs should not affect oncoming traffic too much. The reason the HID lights annoy people is that the self-levelling mechanism cannot work as quickly as the bounce of the car over bumps.

I used these bulbs in the headlights of my previous car. They gave out a much whiter light and certainly seemed brighter. They lit the road ahead much better than standard.

You will need to make sure your headlights are properly set though (after you've fitted the new bulbs - i found they altered the aim). I like my beams to be set just a tad below horizontal and the right unit slightly right of straight ahead. This maximises the dip range whilst preventing glare. Many cars seem to have their lights set way down which severely limits the lit range on dip.

Thanks for you replies guys.

One further question. What about daytime running? Should they still be ok? The dipped headlights on this car switch on and off with the ignition (as with most Volvos). I can switch to just side-lights, but I tend not to do that (mostly because the side-lights stay on when the ignition is off and I'll forget to switch back to dipped to turn the side-lights off !! )

I've used Nightbreakers for some time now. The trade off for the extra light is a shorter lifespan. Using them for daytime running will shorten the life even further.

Are you aware of the load adjuster for the headlight aim?

It's usually a rotary knob on the dashboard and is used to adjust the aim of the headlights to compensate for load.

Yes, run your dipped beam at all times when driving. The last time I was able to see any studies (about 12 years ago, i'm not in auto engineering any more) it was considered that you virtually halved your chances of being involved in a fatal accident running with dip on. I use mine at all times. It's why drls are required now (but with all cars lit the improvemt won't be 50% I suspect).

No, it's what economists call a 'zero-sum game' situation. Your advantage only exists because other people don't drive with them on all the time.

While they may arrive at their destination a minute earlier, you'll arrive much more relaxed.

Chill out, dont get a heart attack, chuck another tinnie in the back.

Putting these bulbs into this car will probably melt the headlight glass but double the value of the car.I would have my eyes checked before I spent needless money on bulbs.

Going home last night on the A12. A car came hurtling up and stayed glued to my rear..super bright headlights irritating even though I have an auto dimming rear mirror.

When he went hurtling past in a great flurry of righteous indignation. I noted that as expected ...chav chic...grubby elderly german car driven by a young man obviously quite anxious to get to his next vehicular accident.

So I think if you fit these things you run the risk of being thought of as 'joining the dark side....ie a right 'one of them'. Even in a Volvo.

I like Osram night breakers, big improvement in everything ive put them in..UV filtered so less harmful to headlamp lenses if they are plastic too.
