Citroen 2CV6 - 2CV6 won't start - Theunisse

My 2CV which has been stood for a couple of years is refusing to start. The battery is a bit duff, but I've attached a Booster/charger but will this supply enough juice if the battery is completely kapput?

I thought initially that the starter motor had seized as it didn't sound like it was turning over at all, but after trying to start it with the starting handle (don't you love old cars!) I realised that the starter motor was turning the engine over, but just very slowly.

I've changed the spark plugs and sprayed the electrical components with WD40 and there is fuel in the car.

Any ideas of what else I can try - may be a newer battery?

Start at the basics...the car must turn over fast enough in order to start....you are lucky that you can make sure the engine isnt seized etc! Check the electrolyte level in the battery if you can remove the caps....there will be a marker to show the correct level, you may need a torch. If they are low, top up with distilled water. Make sure battery and charger is disconnected first though.

Take a plug out turn over the engine is there a bright spark at the plug and can you smell petrol in the plug hole.If yes it will start providing the battery is good which I suspect is duff I think you will need a powerpack or donor battery.

If it has ot been started for 2 years, then it could be the petrol has gone stale. Also if the ignition contact breaker points are corroded ,this will give a poor spark, but you will need to remove the cooling fan for access.hth

Thanks for all the replies

I suspect the battery is in such poor condition that it can start the car even with the booster connected. It will be next weekend before I can have another go at it, but I'll try with a donor battery.

A booster would have to supply at least a couple of hundred amps to be able to start the car from it.
