can any suggest what may be wrong with my friends 3.0 turbo diesel(OHC - 66k miles) isuzi trooper(w reg)? It takes a heck of a lot of cranking over to get started first thing in the morning. It is fine when it starts up, except for a burst of black reek from the exhaust(probably from all the cranking). Also if the hand fuel pump in the engine bay is tried before cranking it is soft for the first two or three pumps before it becomes stiff, suggesting possibly that the fuel is running back? It is fine to start any other time, just has bother when left overnight, or for a long period. The vehicle is used everyday, and runs perfectly. Any help appreciated, thanks.

I would suggest that you check that the heater plugs are working properly, as this is a classic symptom.

If the problem started since having the engine serviced then it could be a problem with the seal on the fuel filter, this is quite common on some diesels.

Ha, just re-read the 'black reek' bit, this would suggest there's fuel there. It's a known fault on Vauxhalls using the Isuzu engine that as the mileage grows towards 100k the valve seats receed into the head causing a lack of compression when the engine is cold, once it's been started and warmed up they're fine until left to go stone cold again. Maybe a simular fault. You could try a search for diesel astra starting and take it from there.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions steve i will put these to my friend next week, it does sound like that is whats wrong with it. Dont think he will be too chuffed to hear that tho, cos it will probably be a few bob to sort! Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Good luck with it. Just as a further note someone did post that their dealer re-shimmed the valves for about £85 on a Vauxhall. That's not a bad price for such a fix.

So the noisy tappets on my 3.1 Monterey are not such a bad thing after all..
Have you tried Central Isuzu in the Midlands?
0121 526 6500
They are independent Isuzu specialist with factory-trained engineers.
A bit gruff on the phone, but I had 1K worth of work done on my 3.1 there, and they were pretty good. Ask for Nick.

UPDATE: My friend booked the trooper into a specialist who diagnosed the valve seats just as suggested. Going to cost 400 notes to sort. Thanks again Shigg, spot on mate!
