Used family car under 5K - JimmyV

I would like to buy a car under 5K. Criteria follows

  • Comfortable
  • Resonable handling
  • Reliable
  • Less than 5 years old

Golf is prohibitevely expensive. I liked i30, but heard it is noisy at motorway speed as the gearing is high.

The opel vectra is looking good. I could get an 2008 SRi 1.8 with model under 5K from network q. I am not very sure how is the ride comfort as it comes with a sports suspension. Design trim is of extremely short supply as of now.

How the SRi ride comfort(on 17 inch wheels-I have read from HJ19 inch will be uncomfortable) compared to say, passat?

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Ch.eck the prices of both size tyres and the insurance you may change your mind about the car.

16" are far better ride and about half the price tyou would be far better with a standard 1.8.

At the end of the day a Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 is a Vauxhall Vectra 1.8. Making it a bit lower and slightly less comfortable doesn't make it any better or worth any more money.

Go Japanese and petrol-powered. Depending on the size of car you need, have a look at the Toyota Auris / Avensis, the Mazda 3 / 6 or the Honda Jazz / Accord.

Comfort depends on you; what suits one person won't suit another. But the above cars should tick your other boxes.

My previous car was mazda 6. 1.8(2007). My only complaint was the road noise and engine noise on motorway. I was hoping the vectra could have been better.

I want to buy a manufaturer approved car. Honda/Toyota are expensive from dealer. Vectra is the most affordable car followed by mazda.

I also located a 2006 skoda octavia at 5000 pounds mark from dealer,Not sure if the noise and ride is better than mazda 6.

Why not test drive an i30 at motorway speeds and decide if it's too noisy

The Vectra is designed to travel monumental distances on motorways with minimal fuss. That's what they made it for.

A lot of people find the Octavia noisy at speed - a lot of tyre noise transmits through to the cabin. Tyre choice can make a big difference, I once swapped worn out Michelins to Nokians and the noise level at all speeds dropped remarkably.

Vectras are known for being amongst the best motorway crusiers more so than Mondeos and many others but not as good to drive on the twisty bits. I was impressed by the motorway manners of a 2 litre diesel Toyota Avensis I had use of many years ago, less so by its stodgy handling and gutless performance but once up to speed very comfy and quite refined. Same with Passats we've owned, very accomplished on the motorway but you'd have to go older than 5 years with high miles or a slightly younger 2006 FSI petrol but TBH you'd probably be better off for the same money with a Japanese alternative and put up with a bit more noise.

I've driven a first gen i30 (petrol) loan car on the motorway and thought there quite a bit of enough engine noise/drone and too much tyre and wind noise for my liking.

I'll echo that. A friend had one, and I couldn't have put up with it. Quietness (from all sources) is one of my priorities in a car, and however cheap it was to run or good to drive, it wouldn't get my money.

Try a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI

many available for less than 5 grand, 57,58 reg.

Servicing on cars over 4 years old is criminally cheap at the Main ford dealer.
