2008 Citroen C5 1.6 HDi - 2008 Citroen C5 replacement battery and how to fit - Dave_W

Good evening all! I have a Citroen C5 and the battery appears to have given up the ghost. The car wouldn't start last week and a voltmeter showed a voltage across the battery of 11v. I got hold of a booster and the car started, took it for a 35 mile or so drive and it worked fine. I've gone to use it tonight and, after traying (and failing!) to start it, nothing happens, even the central locking's dead. I suspect it's the battery as the car has only done 13k in 5 years and for three of them was stored - I don't know if the previous owner disconnected the battery or if that's why it's dead.

Under the bonnet the battery says - 'Varta 12V L3 450/720A' however I cannot find an equivalent battery on the internet. I woudl be really grateful if anyone could help me out with which new one to order as I was expecting it to be a little more obvious!

Also, how do I go about fitting it so not to kill the stereo / sat nav / alarm & immobiliser?

Thank you in adavance, David

battery for this is listed as uk code 096.I would go for a Bosch or Exide replacement.Fitting is easy.Always remove the earth negative lead first and on fitting new battery, refit neg lead last. You will need to leave the ignition on for about 5 mins before starting the car to allow the computor networks to re-sync.Should not need to reset anything, other than possible radio pre-sets.hth

Good morning elekie, thank you for your reply. Would this (http://www.carbatteriesonline.co.uk/details/CITROEN/C5/1.6/2008/__/137/S5007/battery) be ok? It appears that the terminals are in different places to the current Varta as, with the Varta battery fitted the terminals are facing the front of the car, with the positive terminal being closest to the centreline of the car and the negative being closest to the passenger side front wing.

It appears that the leads are set up for a battery to be mounted this way so do you know if there is a Bosch / Exide battery that matches this configuration? Also, what would be the benefits of a battery with greater Ah and CCA?

Thank you again, David

None unless your alternator is capable of charging to higher rate.

Thanks, do you have any idea how I can find what my alternator will charge to? The current battery measures 274(L)x175(W)z190(H) so would the Bosch S5008 be the better one to get as it's the same size or would the S5007 be ok even though it isn't as tall?

Both are more powerful (Ah and CCA) than the current battery.

Thanks again, David

You fit the battery the battery manufacturers recomend for your car.It is between 72 and 75 amps per hour I think from memory.www.batterymegastore.co.uk/wizard/Car+Battery+Find.../

Good morning Collos,

i have got a Bosch S5 008 which arrived this morning (77 Ah, 780 CCA) and I am planning to fit it later on.

Is there any specific way to fit the battery to prevent damaging my car? I understand that I should remove the -ve terminal first and refit the +ve terminal first once teh battery is changed - why is this please?

Also, is there anything else I should do apart from that?

Thank you very much, David

The reason for disconnecting the negative first is that if you don't, and your spanner touches the cars body whilst loosening the positive, you will get a spark. And you don't want any sparks. I usually smear a little petroleum jelly around the posts before refitting the terminals.

As previously mentioned the only thing you are likely to need to do is put the code into the radio. As long as the battery is connected the correct way round i.e. pos to pos and neg to neg, you can do no harm. Ensure the fixing clamp is correctly fitted and tightened.

Gents, thank you very much for your help! I changed the battery about an hour ago and the car starts much smoother it seems and nothing (or no-one) appears to have been fried!

Thank you once again and I hope you have a Merry Christmas! David

2008 Citroen C5 1.6 HDi - Replaced Battery - Depollution Faulty! Please help! - Dave_W

Hi again, you're welcome but maybe I spoke too soon... Now, the depollution faulty light and warning message comes up and stays up.

I had not mentioned it previously as, when I'd used a booster to start on the old light, the same message came up but then cleared. Have I broken something? The car has been sat for a fortnight and not gonbe anywhere although I had attempted to start it twice during that time to see if there was any residual charge in the old battery.

Could I have done something when I was installing the new battery? Will it clear if I give the car a longer run?

Thank you, once again, for your help! David

Hi, went to go out for a long drive to clear the 'depollution faulty' message and, lo and behold, it wasn't there! However, my car now saws it is at it's service interval (actually has 10500 miles to go!).....

At least the book says how to reset this! Is it just French cars that behave like this....

Thank you again to everyone who posted their help and time, David
