Vauxhall Astra G Petrol - Fuel filling problem - JohnFC2012

My girlfriend drives a Vauxhall Astra V reg and she has had this problem since she had the car. If the tank is filled up, the garage pump doesn't automatically stop when the tank is full, instead floods the forecourt.

Does anyone have an idea as to what the cause could be? I'm suspecting its something to do with a gasket or grommet that has perished, but I don't know Vauxhall cars.

Auto shut off is a feature of the pump, not the car.

Is she putting the nozzle all the way in? (OOH matron!).

Okay wording this differently, what is it about the pump that triggers the auto shut off feature?

If its an air pressure or vacuum sensor and there is a problem with the tube (corrosion) or with a gasket/grommet that leaks air/vacuum, could that prevent the auto shut off?

The problem occurs when other people fill her tank for her, whether its an ex-boyfriend, friend or attendant and they don't listen, assuming the pump will shut itself off. That way the local fire service have to come out and close the forecourt.

I just thought someone on a car maintenance site would have a definitive answer as to the cause. I know other vehicles have suffered from this problem in the past, usually in the US.
