Came across a e petition to make it against the law to park blocking a drive, thought I try and encourage some signatures

epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/34271

Just for the record I dod not start this petition!

What if it's my driveway and I want to park there?

What if it's my driveway and I want to park there?

It is not your driveway it belongs tothe council unless you live on a private road I guess.

I'm not interested in semantics. My point is who am I inconveniencing to the point of it needing to be a criminal offence when the only person using said driveway would be me?

If you live in the middle of nowhere the answer would be no one but then no one would apply the law as there would be no one to do it

Private drives and drop down kerbs e-petition - jamie745

Well first off you're admitting this law would therefore be pretty pointless and more bureaucracy we don't need. Secondly it doesn't matter where I lived actually, providing there's no yellow lines on the road I don't see why I couldn't block my own driveway if I wanted to.

If you were talking about dropped kerb entrances to public places then you might have a point, but they are usually covered by double yellow lines anyway so they don't need another law just for them.

So if I come and park on your drive blocking you in you will not mind?

Private drives and drop down kerbs e-petition - jamie745

Yes I would, but that's not what I was talking about was it? I was talking about parking my car in front of my drive. Why should I be prosecuted for inconveniencing myself?

Does this problem really exist? We see examples of inconsiderate parking every day, but I don't think I've ever seen a driveway being blocked.

Someone just down the road from me often has a car parked in front of his driveway.

It's his car. Where's the problem?

Many residents situated around suburban schools would be amazed at that comment, unthrottled

My wife walks our eldest to the local infants school. The tales of inconsiderate parking by school run parents, subseqent confrontations with rightly aggrieved residents who might be trying to leave their property for work, are almost daily.

One typical, recent account was a mother arriving at 3:15 to pick up, parking directly over someone's drive, whilst the house owner/resident was trying to leave. The chap was told that he should lighten up, as she "would only be 5 minutes". So he had to wait in his car, on his drive, outside his house, until a stranger allowed him to go about his business.

Everyone elligible in our house will be signing that petition.

Ah, one of those 'because it happened near me once I want a law made.'

No wonder this country is finished.

Parking enforcement now lies with local authorities rather than the police. The police won't become involved unless a vehicle is càusing an obstruction in the road or on the pavement - not driveways. If a vehicle is an obstruction a £30 fixed penalty notice can be issued. If driveway owners want vehicles to be stopped from blocking their driveway they can register the requirement with their local athority and any vehicle blocking the driveway can receive a fixed penalty notice - including their own. So why have a petition if there is already legislation in place??

I park blocking my dropped kerk regularly, no option if a neighbour or visitor has parked in front on my house.

Never had an issue, why should I, its my drive I am blocking after all.

Private drives and drop down kerbs e-petition - RT

I thought it already was an offence, maybe it's only certain councils - dropped kerbs are used by wheelchairs and pushchairs - as well as cars - so even blocking your own drive is a no-no.

Private drives and drop down kerbs e-petition - Collos25

Quite right RT It is already an offence comes under obstruction.

Thats OK then. Our drop kerbs are common with the neighbour, if I block ours theirs is still clear.

Then again I would not expect a problem when the wife of police inspector down the street constantly blocks the pavement.

Parking on the Highway Across a "private drive " Is not an Offence provided

you adhere to the following

a) do not park on the footpath ( footpaths are for pedestrians) unless directed

to do so by a local Order or Sign

b) Stay with your vehicle and be prepared to move immediately to allow anyone

else to enter or leave the driveway of the premises you are blocking

Private drives and drop down kerbs e-petition - Collos25

Point a is irrelevant in this instance, Point b you are not parking as per the law but you are causing an obstruction which is an offence .I thing you will find the laws on "obstruction" very varied indeed and you would need a ream of fullscap to print them out and brain like Einstein to understand them fully.

Private drives and drop down kerbs e-petition - skidpan

No chance of the Police understanding them then.

Anyone who blocks my drive will discover that cows DO fly.

Private drives and drop down kerbs e-petition - Bobbin Threadbare

I can't do this to my drive. My neighbour comes and tells me off for blocking my own driveway.
