Insurance called about alleged incident with car - elhakko

Hi Honest John Readers

I'd be grateful for some advice.

My insurance company calls me saying an incident was reported to them, involving a car with my Reg. (I initially think it's a scam, due so many claims, PPI, etc. calls and txts I get).

My initial reaction was WTF? Can people just give a reg number and claim the car hit them etc.?

The other party has minor damage to their bumper I think, car is drivable etc.

To protect my no claims and as it is 'minor' I've contacted the third party insurers and plan to deal with it myself and pay for repairs (after inspecting it for myself). Was that a good idea? Should I offer my contact details for them to pass on to the owners of the car? I'm assuming it would be cheaper on both sides (potentially their no claims would not be affected if it is resolved without insurance company involvement?).

Also, after reading some other posts on this forum, I haven't received any letters and Police haven't turned up on my doorstep.

Many thanks in advance for any replies!

Reading between the lines.

1)You scraped another car and left without leaving your details OR reporting to the Police.

2)3rd party got your reg and their insurer tracked you down, got your insurer to contac you

3) You now want to pay the damage(only a scrape!) and keep your NCB.

a) You have been caught and could be prosecuted for driving away after a bump and failing to report to police

b) Your Ins Co knows this

c) (Probably )a bit late to pay directly

Your insurer will probably treat this a a claim but more seriously - driving away, failure to report etc is very serious.

Insurance is a bit of trust - if you pay a premium for certain risk they will cover you.

Driving away, failure to report is a new and BIGGER RISK = Bigger premium next year IMHO - they may even refuse to renew - which makes finding insurance either difficult or expensive or BOTH

Or there was no incident and you are being scammed, Do you recall having a scrape with another car in the recent past? You describe it as an alleged incident - is the allegation true?

Don't forget that at each insurance renewal point you'll need to answer "yes" to the question "any accidents, claims or convictions?"

Offering to repair the damage is an admission of guilt, whether it is intended to be or not. The fact that this is being alleged to have occured so long ago I can only assume that the Third Party is trying to initmate an injury claim before the MOJ reforms come in to play in 2013.

This problem here is that even if you sort the vehicle damage, you will be faced with a BI claim that will need to go through your insurance regardless. If the claim were to litigate the fact that you have offered to repay the third party directly for their damage could reflect badly. But that said if your insurance company do all the relevant investigations they might find enough evidence to succesfully repudiate any claim.
