British designed and built Diesel, wonder if its got a Perkins lurking under the bonnet, if so it will be very interesing to see how they deal with the DPF situation and how their system behaves over time.

If its not a Perkins, who's engine is it?

EDIT, ah now i've clicked on HJ's road test feature its not a Perkins, still be interesting to see how it performs over time.

Shame!

Definitely not a British diesel engine - and it's interesting to see that (as far as I know), none of the other press reports have actually picked up on the fact that it's a Chinese Joint Venture engine with SAIC (MG's parent company).

Interesting point at the start of this thread about Perkins engines. As most of us know, that was developed into the Rover L-Series, which powered the last MG Zed cars... well, a commonrail version was developed, codenamed G-Series or Gallileo, and that was tested before the company went pop. And according to the engineers, it was better than the BMW unit they used in the 75 and Freelander.

Just think if they'd continued with that.

Instead, the design and tooling was sold to an Indian compay called Mahindra, which uses the engine to power a comical-looking off-roader...

I suspect it was designed by Ricardo engineering, the company who fixed the K-series once and for all (for peanuts) something BMW didn't seem to want to invest in when it owned Rover..

A pity the inside's as dull as ever - that dash look like a lift out of a 1990s Mitsubishi to me - tons of cheap hard plastic and ugly looking too.

I have seen no adverting for MG at all. No wonder its a slow seller.

Looks rather like a current Ford/Vauxhall to me -- so yes, pants.

Considering the MG6 was always targeted at fleet sales, why did it take MG in their infinite wisdom two years to discover a diesel engine?

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - daveyK_UK

Jaguar did the same with the x-type, although they did do it at a time when diesel wasnt the default choice.

Naive of MG owners to expect the badge to carry a thirsty petrol engine?

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - jamie745

The day Jaguar put a diesel engine in one of their cars was the day the civilised world ceased to exist.

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - Avant

Customer demand. There weren't, and aren't, enough wooden-dashboard traditionalists to generate the necessary sales.

I personally didn't like the X-type diesel when I tried one some years ago: noisy engine (2.0), unsupportive seats, a clutch that needed a left-footed gorilla to shift it, and trim in the boot that would have shamed a Ford Ka. I'd have done better with a Mondeo.

But I believe the XF diesel is much more civilised, especially the six-cylinder. Take your S-type to a Jaguar dealer, Jamie, and you should be able to wangle a test drive by showing interest in a possible PX: you can tell us what you think of it.

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - jamie745

But if you want an aggressive looking diesel saloon in resale grey with a batcave black interior then there's already plenty of choice among the German carmakers with their 'minimalism.'

The X-Type was an average car I admit, Ford/Jaguar seemed to put more money into the revised S-Type which is still a fantastic car no matter what you say about it. The engine is quiet, silky smooth, the interior is full of buttons, leather and heavy British sideboard wood. You can drive it in a force 9 gale and still feels relaxed and shut off from the outside world.

Why would I want to PX my car for a diesel? Jaguar diesel in a nice looking car it may be but a diesel by all accounts.

That is one of the reasons why Jagauars are available with lots of interiors instead of batclave black. Indeed, Audi does offer, and I'm sure other German manufacturers offer plenty of interior options other than black/dark black/light black/speckled black/black with black stripes.

"Why would I want to PX my car for a diesel?"

I know you don't - but you could pretend you're interested and get a test drive of an XF diesel. It might not be the travesty you think it is.

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - jamie745

Does this XF not come supplied with an engine powered by proper fuel then?

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - unthrottled

I thought they did a 5.0l V8 in n/a and supercharged version, but it won't count for many UK sales. It'll provide the bulk of export sales though.

the 3.0l V6 has probably been dropped. It's not big enough for the American market and too thirsty for the European. I'm not upset by the diesel-but a 4 cylinder? In a Jag?? That is common.

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - jamie745

I think the Chinese have a liking for the petrol XJ models. I don't suppose we've got many of those here either. Don't the Government now use XJ's as ministerial cars? What's the betting even they're diesels?

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - Trilogy

Without diesel Jaguar would go the same way as Saab, Rover etc.

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - jamie745

Only because we have a Government agenda to force people into tractor engined vehicles. How many people owned a diesel car 20 years ago when petrol was reasonably priced?

MG6 Diesel - a hoot to drive - daveyjp
Not only is the XF still available with a 3.0 V6, they have now bolted a supercharger onto it.

The monkeys haven't totally taken over the zoo then.

Yes the engines that actualy create the most polution (diesels) have been sold as the green messiah as they emit less plant food - you couldn't make it up. But the politicians do, as selling the warmist scam generates increased taxation and therefore income for politicians. Man(n) made global warming is the biggest wealth-redistribution scam the human race has ever seen.

Man(n) made global warming is the biggest wealth-redistribution scam the human race has ever seen.

As all the green stuff is basically indirect taxation with a badge on it, it's rather unusual for a wealth-redistribution scam. Most government attempts to move the money around take it from the wealthy and give it to the poor. This one does the reverse, taxing those who cannot afford new cars, new boilers, solar panels, etc significantly more highly than those who can.

I believe that the last government that ran a taxation scheme based on squeezing the poor 'til the pips squeaked to satisfy foreign treaty obligations was that of King John.

I thought a Government's role was akin to boiling a frog. Slowly heat the water which makes said frog drowsy and comfortable, and by the time it realises it's dying, it's too feeble to jump out.
