Landrover Discovery - Best 4WD for new job! - Rossa

I'm starting a new job in the New Year which means I need to visit farms, estates, woodlands etc so need a vehicle that can cope with tracks, fields, woods, farmyards etc.

Going to be covering the country so need something that is also comfortable after a 5-6 hour stint behind the wheel. Current car is a BMW 520 as I do a lot of motorway cruising and I'll be keeping it. I am a lady who is nearly 6' tall so need legroom and space.

A6 Avant Quattro hasn't got enough clearance and I've been told that on the Allroad, the air suspension is pricey to fix if anything goes wrong.

I'm not a fan of 'lifestyle' cars so don't want the X5. I guess I need a really good workhorse like the Landrover Discovery. May need to carry some equipment as I will also be doing County Shows/Fairs.

Also want to know if a LPG converted Disco is worth looking at? And where would I find one?

Is there anything else I should look at? Budget 10-15k.

Thanks

Try hiring one and driving it for a week and then decide...Gives a new meaning to the words "uncomfortable " and "noisy",

Subaru Forester comes to mind, should get a good 'uk a few years old.

Subaru Forester or Outback would do the trick and should prove reliable, probably get a Diesel in your budget or a good petrol which you could sensibly have LPG converted...though tank would idealy be mounted in full size spare wheel well, you then have the problem of what to do with spare....remember to check VED if considering a petrol turbo or any other petrol....in fact check VED before signing on the line for any heavy vehicle you might find a nasty surprising bill for £470 for the year.

If you cover big mileage, full size 4x4's can and do have a serious drink problem.

Not sure Disco's normal reliability would see it as becoming your best mate, if you want a full size 4x4 consider Landcruiser or Patrol, but expect 27 to 30 mpg at best unless driven like a saint.

Probably get a current Hyundai Santa Fe in budget too, good 2.2 Diesel giving decent economy.

Supercharged petrol RR Sports have been showing around 13mpg average on the display when i've driven them to give you an idea.

I had no idea they were so economical... Around town I would expect to see less. In mud and a low ratio I would expect to see a LOT less. Like 5-8mpg.

Hyudai Santa Fe 2.2 comfortable, plenty of room and a good turn of speed when required,I've had one for the past 2yr and enjoy driving it.

Moved down from £3lt S- type and not noticed a lack of perfomance, better mpg 38 ish on motorway, + fwd in winter/sludge.

The Discovery IIIs and IVs have costly to repair air suspension like the Audi Allroad, Freelander IIs are reliable (by LandRover standards!) and are a pleasure to drive.

The Discovery is reputed to be the most unreliable car available. I'd avoid and go Japanese.

The D3 or the D4 ? They don't have the same reliability record just as Freelander 1 and 2 have very difference reliability records.

Irrespective - woudl you recommend anyone to a Land Rover mdel who needed to drive several tens of thousands of miles each year for business; especially if they were not buying new with a warranty?

Yes - a Freelander 2 - Ford did a good job with it as that's where all it's development and engineering expertise came from - and built in a Ford factory, albeit now transferred to JLR.

That's why it's so very different to the Freelander 1, designed and built by LR.

Sadly having owned a Freelander 2 I cannot recommend one at all !

Car drives great, auto is a must for long journeys otherwise with an FR2 you will spend your day changing gear !!!!!!!

Dealer network something else altogether !

make sure you have a good relation ship with a 4x4 specialist and an open cheque book for landrover parts

For serious miles and economy and comfort Passat synchro .(4x4)

im 6 ft and had 3 Passats for doing between 600-900 miles per day and have to say brilliant & reliable !

Only done 900 miles once in a day in a freelander 2

I'll prefer Mercedez-benz as its too comfortable and if you are looking to save the money.... you don't you go for the car with lpg conversion kit installed in it??? it will help you save money without losing the power..
