BMW 760 - Big Beemer - is it OK? - Steamdrivenandy

A friend of mine is a 760 enthusiast, he's on his third, an '00MY model. He's looking to change it for a later one and spotted what the ad says is an '06 760Li in his preferred colours/trim and with his preferred options.

However alarm bells rang because the dealer selling it is asking for circa £30K. Market value for such a car is circa £18K even with the very low mileage of 14K.

Research also told my friend that it wasn't an '06 model, but was in fact built in Sept. '03 and shipped to Jordan in early '04. It has been imported to the UK since then (maybe in '06) and has had a cherished plate which has been retained, so no dated reg. plate is visible.

He has advised the dealer of the issues with the car and they have reduced their price to £15K, although with 14K miles the market price for an '03 is around £12.5K, so it's still overpriced.

Unfortunately the dealer premises are a 250 mile round trip away so it's not easy to eyeball the car and its paperwork etc.

My feelings are that the dealer is a charlatan, given the massive overpricing and the innaccurate dating, but my friend thinks the car is a peach despite the actions of the dealer.

What do you think?

So the dealer wants £12,000 over book for a car with a questionable age that has been imported from abroad.

Sounds good to me, go for it.

I queried the low miles with HJ earlier today and was advised that such low mileages are relatively common on cars in the Middle East where one person can often own 10 vehicles. However if it came to the UK in '06 then it's had 6 years here to put on a decent mileage, unless it's been locked away in the proverbial barn.

My friend has been told it has a full BMW service history and has been looked after by a BMW dealer in Leigh on Sea, Essex recently.

H'mm. If the dealer was originally asking c£30k and has reduced it to £15k just based on a phone call from your friend, I would be very suspicious.

With just 14k on the clock, this suggests either long periods of inactivity/storeage or short journeys. Neither of which are good things.

Best advise your friend to keep looking.

Low miles is also common on a grey import, originally built with a kph speedo - when it's converted/changed for a mph one, there's no requirement to show the true distance covered.

Ah!

We hadn't thought of that, given the history a speedo change could be quite likely.

Thanks

Why not wait on a decent UK car coming along and avoiding the hassles with a foreign car when buying, and even greater hassles when selling.

BMW 760 - Big Beemer - is it OK? - Steamdrivenandy

My friend only discovered the foreign provenance when he took the vehicles details to his tame BMW Specialist who discovered a lot from the BMW system. As you'll appreciate relatively few 6 litre V12 760's come up for sale these days and with such a wide range of options available it's even rarer to find one that meets his spec. Hence his reticence to let go.

Anyone who buys a V12 BMW without a FULL BMW Service history and 3 year warranty has no financial sense .. or is hoping to be very lucky.

You know what they say about a fool and his money.

The model year of the vehicle is given by the 10th digit of the VIN.

Buying a vehicle of this nature from a trader whose practices may be as you describe is like making a bonfire of money - although that's a lot less trouble.

Being besotted by a vehicle and its specification is not the way to land a bargain - and neither is a lack of basic knowledge relating to vehicle age and origin.

WHy are you even asking, of course if you like it buy it and spend a fortune keeping it on the road.

The dealer has to make a profit and you sound as though you have a lot of spare cash.

I'm afraid you are sadly mistaken Sandy.

I run an ever so 'umble Kia Cee'd SW with room for dogs etc.

My pension won't stretch to such a sophisticated mechanical marvel as a Beemer 760 and won't allow me to revel in such beautifully manicured leather and exquisite walnut with detailed marquetry.

No, t'is as I originally posted, a situation that a dear friend has found himself in.

You didn't mention if its Left Hand Drive or RHD . LHD of this type are worth a lot more , but a RHD would not have needed a speedo change . Jordan is a LHD country

This is probably the most computerised car in the world , Lots to go wrong. Try pricing the engine or gearbox ECUs. Your friend can get lucky , but based on values mentioned here , I would offer £10k max and let them come back to you , including a warantee covering electronics. I had a neighbour who ran a 1991 750i V12 and it never failed on him.

It's a RHD and you can easily see it on Autotrader, still posted for its original price, Funnily enough £10K was what he was offering to pay for it.

I guess he's been lucky so far too as he's run three of them with no massive money issues, although he did tell me that he clattered a door mirror on a country lane and it cost over a thousand pounds to replace.

but a RHD would not have needed a speedo change .

UK is the only significant RHD country to use miles - Ireland, Australia and Japan all use kilometers

BMW 760 - Big Beemer - is it OK? - motorprop

Most speedos here show Kms too. I am sure a BMW 760 in RHD would show the miles

on it somewhere. Would a red dot on 30 and 70 mph suffice on a purely KM speedo ?

The major RHD countries are none of above : By decreasing numbers of population, they would be ;

India , Indonesia , Pakistan, Nigeria , Bangladesh , then Japan

The difference as stated above if you read properly is the fact that these countries may drive on the right but use KMs and not miles.

Whoops, small gremlin there: Nigeria changed to driving on the right in 1972!
