I am the proud owner of a 2012 VW Transporter SPortsline and I am off to France shortly. I need to fit winter tyres as is the law. Does anybody have any specific recomendations as I have of course looked at all the websites but it is something of a minefield. VW seem to know little or nothing about the subject but the only recomendation they gave was for a Dunlop SP LT 60 which only gets middling scores from some testers. I would really appreciate any ideas as to how to move forward and make an informed decsision and get something really good. My curent tyre size is 255 45 R18.

A quick look at mytyres dot co dot uk shows £70 (avoid) to £323 (gulp) in that size and speed rating! They show test results for most of the tyres that include wet, dry and snow performance, comfort, noise and wear so you can weigh up what is important to you.

I can recommend the Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme which is mid price but scores very well especially in snow grip and overall as well as the tyres costing £100 more each. Prices not surprisingly seem to have gone up quite a bit in the last two months. There's a mix of winter tyres on flea bay in that size. Whatever you buy, you'll need to check you've got the right load rating which I guess will be higher due to the weight of the van.

Many thanks. It is in fact not 'the law' in France it is however 'recomended and in some cases obligatory-how that is different I dont know. This is a minefield as the Vredseteins you mentioned are appaently no good in fresh snow(that is what one blog said. If you are an "old Toffee' I guess that makes you an Everton supporter. If so I am too.

Best wishes.

I bought my Vredesteins from a 4x4 independent specialist who for years has been recommending and installing them for Land Rover and other 4x4s and has only ever had excellent feedback. I was in France last year when the snow dumped on the UK and northern France and I drove it from Normandy to Boulogne on fresh snow, up steep hills and stopped deliberately and started again no issues. Stopped on the motorway by police as cars were sliding off the road on black ice. I didn't realise until I got out of the car and fell a over t on the ice. I can recommend them without hesitation. Yes I support Everton too. IMWT!

They will designate roads only passable with chains or winter tyres ,you can fit anyspeed tyres as long as you have a sticker on the dashboard advisable in France compulsory in Germany.

Second the Wintracs, didn't need to use the 4x4 function on my pick with those fitted, it went everywhere happily in RWD only, cold wet grip excellent.

It is good to have your feedback. I too swear by snow tyres I have just sold a Navara and with snow tyres on it would go literally anywhere in the white stuff either 2 or 4 wheel drive

I will have another look at the Ver watsits though thanks to your comments.

Re Sir Davids boys I think something special is happening this year lets hope so.
