Heater takes a long time to start warming the car, but the air con works fine.

More detail please!! Is the engine itself taking a long time to warm up or just the heating? The if its the former then your thermostat is the most likley cause but there are many other possible causes. The more detail you give the more easily and accurate people can help.

Had the same problem on my Mondeo 2.0, which uses the same engine as the Focus.

The thermostat was stuck in the open position, after fitting a new one the heater worked fine.

If doing the job be very careful with the plastic thermostat housing. The recommended torque for the thermostat retaining fixing bolts is little more than hand-tight, and new ones cost £90!

Tommk4. Thanks for your help, this is my son's car and will need to check at the weekend. It is also a Ghia (03 reg) which has a different heat control lever than the dial on the regular models.
