VW Lupo 1.4 - top end rattle on start up - Jon P

Car presently at 163,000 miles. Full VW history, oil changed every 5k.

Over the last 20k, our car has started to rattle a bit from the top end. It's particularly noticeable when starting from cold, even with fresh oil. Once warmed up and ticking over, most of the noise disappears leaving just one constant, quieter click/tap occurring at the frequency of approx twice to three times per second.

I know this will be wear related but what is it likely to be specifically? Also, how much would it cost to make it go away? Thanks.

Camshaft bearings and/or worn oil pump.

Worn hydraulic tappets (lifters). If the oil pressure is to spec a new set of lifters should cure it. Consider having this done when the next cam belt change is due.

Cheers Crasher - this is exactly the advice gleaned from Club Lupo just now.

Apparently, it's completely normal for a higher mileage petrol VAG engine to sound like ours and that it is not a pressing issue, though should be addressed as and when. That lone click/tap which remains in evidence once the engine is warm is presumably just the most worn of the lot.

Thanks everyone.
