Toyota Avensis Recall - GBP1705

I have received a recall notice from Toyota concerning problems regarding Tow-Bar fittings, Seemingly the ball joint can crack causing failure. I called local Toyota dealer to inform them that my car has and never has had a Tow-Bar fitted and can they complete the paperwork accordingly so that VOSA can update their database. I was informed that this could not be done and that they must inspect the vehicle which seemingly takes around 1 hour.

Is there another problem that they are not informing us of and they need to check out ?

The only two recalls that have been issued recently have been re the master power window switch (where some owners have been applying a lubricant to the switch), and re the rear suspension arm.

Toyota seem to automatically use the VOSA recall system to correct potential problems with their cars - unlike some manufacturers who just seem to carry on regardless.

Or do they make a labour charge on each inspection done?

Sorry this is a bit off-topic, but relevant IMHO, but the "chrome" gear-knob insert on my VW started flaking within the warranty, so I asked for a replacement. Takes about 3 seconds to change.

Called into the dealers to collect it, but they insisted I give them the vehicle "for 10 minutes...."

Next thing it is in the worshop with the bonnet-up and the diagnostics plugged-in, ..........................unbelieveable, no wonder they cost so much?

Toyota are very good on their recalls. When I had to have the accelerator pedal recall done on my previous Auris (they had to take out the accelerator pedal assembly, insert a shim to reduce any play, and re-install the assembly), the work took about 40 minutes. I also had a compensatory cheque for £25 from Toyota and a complete set of car mats from the dealer.

No charge for the inspection or subsequent work.

Not sure whether Toyota are still as accommodating as re the compensation, but the recall work is not chargeable to the owner.

I received the same notice today. I read the letter several times trying to work out whether I actually needed to do anything. As the only reference is to problems with any towbar itself, I can't see why anyone whose vehicle doesn't have a tow bar should be required to do anything, except perhaps respond that that is the case. I suppose that given that I am not the original owner of the vehicle I don't know for sure that a towbar has never been fitted to the vehicle, but if that uncertainty requires it to be checked then that would imply that the fault is with the actual original strucure, or could cause damage to some part of it. If that is the case then the letter needs to make that clear emphasise that all owners need to get it checked. Not the clearest communication I've ever had! As Ive never had a towbar and I'm pretty sure the vehicle has never had one I think I'll ignore it for now and see if they chase it up with a clearer letter!

"Recall

This recall is related to a tow bar, which was an optional extra on some models, including the Avensis, Previa and Lexus GS. Those who may be affected will receive a letter from customer services informing them that: "We have found that there might be a possibility that if an accessory tow bar has been fitted to your vehicle it may develop a crack. In the worst case this could result in the tow ball fracturing."

Customers are assured that there are no reported accidents or injuries as a result of the problem, and that if they have a tow bar on their car, they should take it to their local dealer, who will replace it free of charge.
