VW Golf TDi SE PD 110 - Cold start misfire? - sausagepilot

Hi all. New member here, just joined and have a question for those in the know.

For the last month or so I have had a misfire/rough running problem from cold. Traction control light (yellow triangle in yellow circle) comes on after depressing the loud pedal literally moments after setting off. After engine is warmed up (5 miles approx) the light will go out and engine will run fine if the car is turned off and then on again. It clears and pulls strongly from there on.

I have had it put on a 'snap-on' diagnostic machine and it threw up a 'cylinder 1 injector fault'. (VW code 18074, genereic code P1666).

Before I go out and shell out the inordinate sum of £330 (once I get the $110+VAT back for the old one) for a new injector and attempt to fit it myself (I assume its hidden under the rocker cover?), could this be a wiring loom problem? How do I check? or should I say; where do I start? On the diagnostic it mentioned something about possibility of earth fault? Can't be sure, but I 'gleaned' it over the mech's shoulder.

I emphasise that this is a COLD start problem. Not one that occurs after 5 or so miles. If anything it will clear after its warmed up once its switched off and on.

Thanks in advance for any help with this problem.

Regards

I would suggest you start at the cheap end .Replace the in-head injector wiring harness first.A common cause of misfire on these.hth

Thanks for the prompt replies chaps. Much appreciated.

Will check the wiring harness as that has been mentioned on another forum. Will also check the glow plug time 'on', and report back.

I have alot of work to do on the ole girl (n/s window reg/panel, alternator pulley clutch, flywheel & clutch already), so will dress her down when the fault is found. The joys of motering huh.....

Hi before you go shelling out aload of money on a new injector have you checked to see how long your glow light is on for? Just because if it isn't on long enough then you you have a glow plug fault where there not warming up enough and if the light is on to long then then there warming up and going cold agin which will cause a cold misfire in both circumstance's. I'm not ruling out a dodgy injector but i would check this before hand as it has been known to throw up an injector fault on diagnostics but turn out to be a worn glow plug. Glow plugs are alot cheaper than injectors so I would check this route out first.

Hope this helps.

Richie.

It may be the in head harness but being a PD it will not be 110PS, it is 100, 115, 130 or 150.

Its a PD, and the 'i' is only red. 100 I guess...?

Just on my way to get a window reg, so will enquire about the injector harness while I'm there.

THanks for the info so far chaps

The head harness is by far the most common cause of a misfire on the PD, I replaced my first one in 2001 on a car we had imported the year before.
