Peugeot 306 LX 1.4 petrol - Fuel pump noise - Neville Hillyer

During the last few days we have become aware of our fuel pump. I am not sure if it has got louder or if it should be cutting out.

It runs momentarily prior to the engine starting but once started it appears to run continuously. Is this normal? It is most noticeable during idle.

The car appears to function OK but we are concerned about the the extra noise and if it is indicative of a serious problem.

What controls the pump if it is not intended to run continuously?

Which of the following are most likely to be the problem?

1 - the pump assembly
2 - a relay etc
3 - a filter
4 - other.

The fuel pump runs all the time while the engine is running.Pump noise can be caused by various situations.Blocked fuel filter ,tank vent problem or the pump itself worn.hth

Sorry - only just saw your reply - how do I turn on mail notification?

Is it solenoid and diaphragm like the old Morris 1000? If so perhaps back pressure normally inhibits the next stroke until the fuel is used.

Morris 1000 pumps normally outlasted the car. Are the Peugeot ones known to fail at about 100,000 miles?

I don't recall seeing a vent or filter.

A modern fuel pump in a petrol car is nothing like an old SU pump in a Morris Minor. The SU pump could possibly manage about 3 psi on a good day, a modern petrol injection pump is normally above 5 bar (70 psi) and they pump at that pressure all the time. The pressure is regulated by a regulator (believe it or not) on the manifold fuel rail nornally set at approx 3 bar, any excess fuel is allowed back to the tank via the fuel return pipe thus the pumping rate does not reduce when less fuel is used. If the fuel pressure dropped below the pre set figure the engine would run lean.

They can fail and when they do its replacement time, not normally repairable.

Those SU fuel pumps were legendarily unreliable. They might well last "the life of the car" from the manufacturer's viewpoint, i.e. getting past the warranty period, but long term the points will become "iffy" and it'll stop working. Thumping it with a wheel brace can jazz some life back into it for a while.

I'll agree that while they work they're great, but once they start to play up, replacement is the only option.

There is a very good reason why aftermarket solid-state alternatives are available to this day.

When I had a car with an SU pump and it played up, a replacement set of contacts was only a few shillings and easily fitted in under 5 minutes.

Ahhh-memories are made of this! My dear old Dad used to say "kick the bulkhead boy" when the SU pump on his old 1952 Morry Minor used to stick and stall the car, kicked it and you could hear it ticking like mad 'till it filled the float chamber -it was fitted on the passenger side bulkhead!
