On the subject of fuel consumptions, its amazing what a gently but progressively driven vehicle can achieve, letting it overrun for example effectively coasting half way up the next incline, and timing approaches to junctions etc to maintain progress.
With manual transmission (or manually overriden auto) i find cruise can be very effective on fairly flat roads, but once hills and an auto box come into the mix then i find the car will automatically select a lower gear than gentle manual throttle use would result in order to maintain that exact speed where an economical driver would only gently increase the throttle and maybe let a couple of mph drop off in order to let the torque in higher gear take it up the incline gently.
