BMW 1 Series 116d 09 - Oil change periods on Diff - Old Gitt

22k of Low revs Low mileage short trips so now change oils yearly on engine 2yr on box & brakes What do i do with DIFF?.I do one or two M23 trips of 60miles x2 in4th&5th or 2500 revs +/ - instead of 60mph in 6th getting 81mpg in the inside lane on cruise control .

BMW 1 Series 116d 09 - Oil change periods on Diff - skidpan

My118D does about 1900 rpm at 70 regardless of the lane I am using and about 48mpg on average. You must be taking some illegal substance to think you are getting 81mpg.

Do you really change the oil in the brakes every 2 years.

Diffs and gearboxes are maintenance free, just need the levels checking, no other maintenance.

Extra urban figures from BMW are given as 82mpg so 81 cruising on the motorway seems quite believable for short periods .

HI Collos25 Thanks for belivng me, these are the best mpg figure I get say going to Brighton but the return trip will fall to 76mpg ,rehills.Yes I know most speedos are out by 7% so none of these figures are worth any piontless dissagreements but it some how makes me feel more content when only getting 10to15 mpg when I drive how BMW desgined it to be driven safely of corse. Sorry for grammer@ spelling to whom it offendes Iam trying to improve, Old Git , see is it one or two?

YES skidpan thats what I use to belive untill reading an Honest John artical on Old f***s like me doing 7k a year.Your 118d with140ish BHP, I have wondered if it needs to work so hard at this optum airodinamic 60mph for a brick on wheels ,as to my 116d .If you have criuse control I bet your do better mpg. I noticed a 07 118d 3d with that shutter systerm behind the grill but a £100 tax disc, has yours? Thanks for making me smile, no illegal substances involed, some times a good bottle of wine so could be a dream as there was a cracking looking blond lady sitting next to me. If you drive as hard as I used to YES please change the brake oil as BMW do at 2yrs theres nothing worse having fadeing brakes at 120+ as you enter a bend down hill with the audi you just over took up your **** Thats when a 5series is worth every penny. Sorry that must be another dream but there wasnt a blond in sight ??? Old Gitt

If thats on a public road you need banning. Irresponsible law breaking people do not deserve replies on any forum even if they are old gits.

skidpan that was quick , quite right with the high numbers of uninsurred no mots band drivers and people driving into the uk with no licences.I was going on to long so raped it up with out saying this was on my retrun from Italy via Germany in the90s after a wedding do,so wasn;t breaking any law. Sorry to mislead you, being irresponsible that was down to drivers skill, which was high out there and the car being used. In the uk there are track days for all that but when I come across a 45 mph diver in the middle lane on the M25 irresponsiblelty and a minum speed limit comes to mind,if you had to brake to stand still at your legal 70mph new fluid wouldn;t be a bad thing, hope it never happens safe driving Old Gitt ( Apolliges for gramer@spelling I hope to improve. )

Reel him in Old Git....you old devil you, actually daring to drive a car enthusiastically, you should be ashamed of yourself, didn't you think of the children..:-)..i daren't tell what i might have got up to in times gone by judging by the reaction.

On the subject of fuel consumptions, its amazing what a gently but progressively driven vehicle can achieve, letting it overrun for example effectively coasting half way up the next incline, and timing approaches to junctions etc to maintain progress.

With manual transmission (or manually overriden auto) i find cruise can be very effective on fairly flat roads, but once hills and an auto box come into the mix then i find the car will automatically select a lower gear than gentle manual throttle use would result in order to maintain that exact speed where an economical driver would only gently increase the throttle and maybe let a couple of mph drop off in order to let the torque in higher gear take it up the incline gently.

It is pass my bed time Gordon, this is my first time on any fourm so making mistakes. Try a test drive in a new bmw there's a switch eco/com/sport its good but like that modern Auto you lose the control of the older selector box.Advanced Driver are you? Enjoyed your veiws P.S I won't say that The children where fine fast asleep in the back at the time .Good night. Old Gitt

Always amazes me how many drivers think they are driving gods just because their cars can do 120mph. At that speed things happen fast, very fast and even though good brakes obviously help the situation can soon get out of control.

Years ago I raced at club level with some success (the biggest I guess was meeting the wife who was a championship coordinator) but compared to the really good club racers I was a nobody. When I rode with some of them (track days, not race days) it was easy to see why they won as often as they did. Consistent winning takes more than a car that do 120 mph and new brake fluid.

Does the diff even have a drain plug?

Does the diff even have a drain plug?

Would not expect the gearbox or diff to have drain plugs when the lubricant does not have a service life like engine oil.

never mind thunderbird your a real winner getting a wife, was this in the 60s when 120 was fastish? Happy days I hope, couldn't afford that hobby but understand from track days.Gods end up dead and that 5 series maxed 165ish but whats the piont O/G

Actually it was in the 80's 90's and in the class I raced with the twisty UK tracks with shortish straits you would never see 120 mph, in truth with the gearing I had 120 mph would probably have been the absolute max at 8000 rpm, maybe at Snetterton with a following wind. It was all about being smooth and keeping up your corner speed.
