Renault Espace 2.2Dci / 20. Dci - Renault Espace 2.2Dci 2005 - 2007- any good ?? - Mr Fox

Seen a few of these on sale, and seem very low price for the type of vehicle. I'm thinking of changing our Renault Grand Scenic for an Espace, but heard so many horror stories about the engines going bang, the later 2.0 version may be a better engine, but aren't they all saddled with DPFs so impractical unless used mainly on Motorways ?

Is it best avoided altogether ?

Cheers

F

I know about all the problems with the 2.2 Engine, but is the 2.0 Better ?

Renault diesels with DCI in the description form 1999? to 2007 have a well deserved reputation for being unrelaible rubbish. Unlike Renault Espaces which are unreliable electrically pretty well all the time.

So the ideal combination : for reducing the unemployment level and making you poorer...

So is a Post 2007 Espace fitted with the later 2.0 Engine likely to be worth a gamble.

I know the 2.2 Engine has a propensity to Self Destruct caused by the EGR valve and the Turbo malfunctioning, many 2.2 cars on sale are advertised as having had a new engine or Turbo, I am quite sure these are to be avoided.

But what about the newer 2.0 engine ?

Reviews in 2007 gave this engine the thumbs up, see below, now five years on what is the experience of those who've had an espace during this time ?

Renault has just introduced a few revisions. What's it like? Chief among these is the availability of the 2.0-litre dCi turbodiesel engine with 173bhp from the Laguna. And, as in the Laguna, it’s a cracker. Quiet – very quiet – at idle, it pulls cleanly and strongly from around 1500rpm, doing its best work between 2500 and 3500rpm, right through to 5000rpm. So although the Espace is hefty, the dCi motor never feels strained when hauling it. It will also return a commendable near-40mpg on the combined cycle.

I wouldn't entertain one or the other large French MPV due to their well reported expensive regular problems, but you could lessen the costs of fixing the inevitable problems if you have a few good indy's around, a Renault specialist, a good Diesel workshops and a good sparky....i wouldn't be taking such a vehicle to the main dealer for fixing unless absolutely forced.

Whenever i buy an out of the ordinary vehicle such people are part of my pre purchase research.

Well Gordon We already have a Grand Scenic, and we have a very good independant Renault Specialist who looks after this for us. and so far in 4 years we have only had one problem with the dashboard display, that Renault fixed quite cheaply as part of a goodwill program, So im not against Renaults Per Se.

I really would love to hear from anyone with the later 2.0 Engined Espace, to see if these are free of the horrendous problems that the 2.2 had.

I also had a 1995 Renault Laguna as a company car in France, that ran to 400 K km with no problems, it was a bit ropey by the end but never broke down. I think the main problem is the poor maintanence by useless dealerships rather than the vehicles themselves.

We've change the oil every 3000 miles on our Scenic and its never missed a beat.
