MAZDA 6 2008 Petrol - MAZDA 6 cd changer jammed - RBP

Anyone help a new poster?

Wifey has a Mazda 6 2008 petrol, loves it, until... The CD changer jammed, it ate 6 cds, and will not spti them out. We called the dealer (COOP) who said, ah yes it's a common fault.

(easy to fix I thought) What's involved?

Oh we need to remove the dash (all day job) and we need to REPLACE (?) the radio and CD (why?) The CD / Radio unit will cost £1000, and then there is labour on top!!!!!!!

Yowser! £1000 + to fix (replace) a radio, I must look at the dictionary for RIP OFF.

If I had £1000 to spare what kind of HiFi could I get in a car?

Has anyone come up against this, can anyone suggest instructions, a cheaper method of emptying the CDs?

She is going to replace the car end / start of year NOT ANOTHER MAZDA I HASTEN TO ADD, you blotted your copy book on this one. Although since investigating this I have discovered other dealers chargin rip off amounts for 'simple' jobs becasue cars are now so impossible to get at without a myriad of 'special' tools or software.

If I get a haynes manual (if ther is now such a thing) will it show me how to get the radio out?

The radio still works fine, and the CD to all intents and purposes says ejecting, but nothing happens.

Help / suggestions (polite ones) gratefully accepted.

R.

Check the Mazda-specific forums. Maybe there is a trick to getting the CD's out.

I had a look at the unit in my 2011 model. Assuming that it is the same, that unit looks well built in. I.e. there's none off those holes for inserting the rods/levers to jimmy the thing straight out of the dash.

A Haynes manual will give the general procedure for taking the dash apart.

If not, then check with a local mechanic for a quote just for the labour (rather than pay Mazda dealer hourly rates). And maybe replace with a unit from a breaker.

If you are going to trade the car in, then is it worth going to the expense of fixing this? If your model has the aux audio input jack, just use an MP3 player for the time being and write off the CD's inside.

AFAIK, there is no Haynes Manual for the Mazda 6.

There are plenty of instructions online for removing the radio console from the previous Mazda 6 if you wanted to get it out yourself, although I guess the latest version may be different.

Have a good search online - here is one example :

It's for the american model, but may still be relevant ?

There is but it's a Yankee one, so there's no diesel version info and any differences will of course be annoyingly useless advice to a UK reader.....

OP - you can try pulling out the CD at the front with eyebrow tweezers; really thin pointy ones. That works ok!

Enjoy your Mazda 6. They're brill.

And she'll go mad next time she wants to use them - how do I know that?

By 2008 the portable MP3 player had been around for over 10 years, the iPod for 7 years and still motor manufacturers thought that a CD changer was a neater idea than a line in jack socket.

My 6,(a TS2) certanly has a 3.5 jack socket which allows the connection of an MP3 player. This is in a covered `box`between the front seats,so the player and cable are hidden. This seems to me a very tidy solution. In my case I simply connect the cable to my mobile to play my music and since the phone is connected via bluetooth there is no need to remove the phone from it`s hidey-hole to make or answer a call. Music is automatically muted if a call comes in.

unclip the trim surrounds on the middle of the centre glovebox console.

remove the 2 hidden screws under the bottom edge of the dash radio/vent module.

take out glovebox lid and remove 10mm fixing bolt into side of radio support.

pull out the central radio / vent module complete.

It won't do you a lot of good because it is the most horrendous complicated mechanism on the planet.
