Has a VW Up Automatic got a suitable gearbox to allow it to be towed behind a Motorhome for lengthy trips aboad?

I very much doubt the Up is a automatic transmission in the traditional sense, it's probably a robotised manual or some sort of sequential gearbox, in which case towing it shouldn't be a problem as long as it's in neutral.

the blurb says it is an ASG - Automatic Shift Gear does that help to clarify?

Yep, ASG is a robotised manual - so should be find to tow.

As with all these things the only way to find out is to check the owners manual. Smart are auto clutch, but they must only be towed for short distances at low speeds.

Various other issues as well to do with weight, electrics and braking. Not saying it's insoluble but last time subject was discussed plenty of complications emerged.

You should check out the reviews and drive one. I'm sure I've read a review of the auto box Up and it says it stinks.

two points: not sure how we could try towing it for a while to test it out which was the main thread and point of the conversation! Secondly no vw up's are available locally for a few weeks with an auto box to road test yet so on the basis of the feedback from this forum bought the manual version instead having had already test driven that version.

Tells you all the info regarding towing in the Handbook failing that ask VW.
