Speed Bump Causes Crash !! - Snappulus

A CYCLIST was airlifted to hospital following a serious collision in Smallfield on Saturday.

The collision between the bicycle and a grey Volvo estate, which were travelling in opposite directions, occurred near the Gunyah Stud Farm in Redehall Road at around 11.15am.

It is thought the cyclist attempted to go over a deteriorating speed bump and lost his balance and collided with the windscreen of the oncoming car.

The cyclist, a man in his 30s from south London, was airlifted to Kings College Hospital in London with serious head injuries.

The driver of the Volvo, a local man in his 40s, was uninjured.

"The cyclist was conscious after the incident, but it was quite a nasty injury," said Lingfield's village PC Barry Reece.

The road was closed in both directions between Cross Lane and Plough Road while emergency services dealt with the incident.

I do hope the cyclist recovers, and sues the local authority if the damage to the hump was the cause of the crash. But I sympathise with the Volvo driver, who could have been any of us.

What I should have said, was that is a quote from this weeks local paper.

These idiots on the council should be shot. Then, hung, drawn and quartered for the misery they make in the life of the common man.

Whilst having sympathy for the cyclist and hopes he makes a full recovery.

The fact is you can't just blame some else if you fall off your bike on an uneven road surface that has not been seen.

Speed bumps are there because a minority of drivers cannot or will not drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions so to avoid death or injury the authority have to address this problem.
