Toyota RAV4 - Automatic troubles, slipping, bumping and no creep - Sundialer113

My Rav4 (2002) automatic is giving troubles intermttently. It may have no creep on level ground when drive is selected, or it is reluctant to change from 1 to 2 without slipping as if in neutral and then may change with a bump. Another event is up a muddy lane it may slow down with the engine labouring but may go OK after stopping and reselecting D or L. The oil was OK but changed as a precaution but changing it had no effect.

There's a well known auto-transmission ECU fault around this model year (01-03), if the ECU is not changed when it first fails, it soon takes the transmission with it. I beleive the ECU in question is behind the glovebox. I suspect there are plenty of Toyota owners' forums which probably know this fault inside out. You could try unplugging and cleaning the contacts in this ECU with contact cleaning spray. Good luck.

My auto specialist in Merthyr Tydfil after much thought, changed the oil filter in the auto box (and also changed the recently changed ATF oil) and what an improvement! I have done about six journeys and so far the gear changes have been satisfactory. This, after having been to two main dealers for tests with no real results, one said to have the gearbox re-conditioned.
