Peugeot 106 1997 1.5 Diesel - Both driveshafts a bit loose. (newbie) - liammcl

Hi,
I am a newbie, but I'm willing to give it a go :)

Is it unusual thath both driveshafts can be wiggled by hand
(not a lot, but I can hear them clunk. They also clunk when starting off)

The clucking seems to be coming towards the engine side on both ,
and not the CV end.

I am going to try and swap both drive shafts myself (thanks to YouTube :) )
...but I am wondering if it's something inside the engine that's loose?
(Dunno, if that is a daft question ?)

ps Independently, the car had been up on a ramp at national & they confirmed the drive shafts were loose.

Some background...
6 months ago, it passed its MOT with no advisories..

How I came to look at the drive shaft, is that at 50mph the whole car would shake quite bad...it wasn't coming through the steering.

I did the usual, wheel balancing, and home made alignment with 2 jacks and a piece of string (again Youtube...it's taught me all I know tbh :) )

The car sits low at the back, probably needs 2 shocks, and the passenger side rear wheel is starting to bend inwards, which is because of a rubber on the axle on the back.

also....what is likely to happen if I leave it , until it falls off?

Many Thanks
Liam

The shock absorbers have no effect whatsoever on the ride height, it's the springs that hold it up!

Its quite normal for the driveshafts to be sloppy , the splined ends are a relatively loose fit in the diff, then the diff itself is sloppy because of the internal gears and final drive gear plus the movement in the CV joints, unless its making any extrainious noises, its unlikely there is a problem.

As bathtub tom says the shock absorbers are to damp the suspension movement, it the springs that control the height.

Many thanks to both of you for replying.

Tom, I can't see any springs in the back,
I wonder if the height is set by the torsion bar?

Many, many thanks Peter
you have saved me a heck of a lot of work !

Maybe it is as simple as a tyre or wheel issue
... they have full wheels with a good tread for a tenner at the scrap yard..
so I could get a couple and try them..

Cheers

Just in passing.....,
when I brought the car to National for them to have a look,
the mechanic saw that one side at the back was 2 inches lower than the other.

He just bounced the rear side up and down, and that side went back up to the same height as the other side.

After that the wobbling improved a heck of a lot !

The one at National said it was the shocks that were making it sit so low...
and me being clueless, went along with it :)

Tom,
I'll forget about the height , I was thinking that it indicated a problem with the shocks.
Cheers :)

Actually, thinking about it,
it was the same guy at National, who said I needed a new drive shaft because of the clunking.

Tbh, it's not much movement at all... I had another look tonight and it all seemed fine , maybe 3 mm movement.

Thanks all... I shall veture forth ,
armed with this new knowledge

Cheers and many thanks !

You won't find the type of 'mechanic' you need for sound advice at a fast fit joint.

You need a decent indy to give it the once over for you.

Thanks Gordon,
I will go in 2mrw and report back.
Cheers all ...I am a lot more hopeful than I was a couple of hours ago !

just an update,
I haven't been into an indi garage yet, the 2 I tried were busy at the time,
and the shaking seems a lot better, it disappears completely sometimes !

Just ahd a look under and one side of the torsion bar has a gap as it goes through the hole?

Anyways, nothing to report as yet...
I will update , as soon as I know, incase it can help anyone else.

well, brought it in today,
and the verdict is a slightly worn wheel bearing & some play in the driveshafts towards the engine side.

Thankfully, it is not dangerous, so I can keep driving till something falls off :)

I've had a look and the battery was loose, so have tightened that up.

The shudder seems better atm, but it comes and goes, so time will tell.

Cheers all
