Alfa 159s are very keenly priced - not dull - but are obviously italian, realibility is no worse than a lot of German cars these days.

MB C Class, current model appears to be very good, the injector problem affecting the Diesels should have been sorted with replacement injectors by now, but the rare petrols are giving good economy.

BMW 3 series, huge choice of engines, always a good bet, only downside being runflats which you can of course change to normal and obtain a spacesaver to suit.

Both come with proper and excellent auto boxes if thats your thing, MB manuals not so nice, foot operated parking brake not helpful and could prove difficult to sell on, MB buyers want autos.

Toyota Avensis Tourer, again excellent auto if required, should be ultra reliable and dealers are as good as they get, 5 year 100k warranty, only downside being electric handbrake which to be fair i've only heard of one complaint of failure and should it go wrong i would expect Mr T to fix this for some reasonable time after warranty time (rather than mileage) runs out if you maintain the car well, petrols almost as good on fuel as Diesels.

Honda Accord, will be a good car, latest model i can't abide looks wise but thats personal, you seldom hear of Honda issues.

You didn't mention your budget. Earlier this year went looking for large hatch or estate with an auto box and petrol engine. Would have liked to stay with Honda as was swapping in Accord saloon. If rear legroom is an issue for you then Accord estate is very cramped in the back. After looking at others including crossovers settled on 18 month old Avensis Estate, loads of room, sensible prices, with reasonable economy and very comfortable to ride in. The bonus is the remainder of the 5 year 100k manufacurers warranty, which I managed to extend fo ra further year.

Why change it if it's still going well?

How about another Saab estate, cheap as chips.

BUDGET?

You can't really answer this without a ball park budget. You don't say how old the Saab is either so p/x values could vary wildly.

If was replacing a Saab and wanted something similar, I'd be looking at Volvos......an Audi A4 Avant could be a good bet too; they're well-specced, roomy, comfy. BMW estates get favourable reviews too. I like the Honda Accord tourer - maybe I'm one of the rare fans of their newest styling. A Skoda Octavia estate would also be a decent option.

I'd look at an Octavia estate. Two people nearby, who have had Saabs for years have gone for Octavias.

How could I forget budget?!
We've got up to £8000 I think.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I was thinking along similar lines. However, no one has mentioned Insignia estate. I have seen much more recent examples for the money than my other preference, the avant.

Yoo could certainly find a Saab 9-5 estate that meets all your criteria, there will certainly be 2009 models around at the sort of price you are thinking of. You would have a choice of fuel and engine output. I would expect prices to be depressed given Saab's demise, and almost certainly cheaper than a comparable Audi A4 Avant.

My 2003 9-5 estate continues to soldier on at 182,000 and I have yet to find parts an issue. And there's plenty of expertise around.

And you get great seats and an excellent comedy cupholder.

Especially if you find one with leather seats and the optional fan cooling as fitted to mine - wonderful when it's 30°+ :-)

Really? Saabs have this? After driving home from work yesterday with an aircooled face and a sweaty back (awful non breathable cloth seats in my Avensis) that feature would have been a godsend :)

They have 'night mode' too :-D

Really? Saabs have this?

It's a relatively rare option, but yes, there are a few around. Cooling air in the summer and heated base & backrest in the winter, luxury. The seats themselves incorporate a fan, and are electrically adjustable, the drivers with a memory, and I gather that if they fail a brand-new replacement is £5,500!!

Of course the best car for your money will be a Ford Mondeo - they're great to drive too.

I've driven one recently and couldnt see what the fuss is all about with regards to it's handling. Seemed average.

The car itself is aimed at "mr average" though

Some people dont like to be average :D

I'm looking at a 92000 mile 9-5 tomorrow, 3 litre, 03 at 2495 from a good dealer. It looks like top money though, I'm wondering what to offer without insulting him. I pretend I'm good at these things but I'm only average.

You obviously like to gamble so try a very low offer and see how surprised he is.

But not the 3-litre diesel. They are prone to strange things going wrong, usually a slipped liner on the aft bank. When they are running they are beautiful ... but .... go onto a Saab specialist site for more information .. been there and have the scars (and the mug and teeshirt)

I believe the engine was more reliable in the Vauxhalls; something to do with its angle IIRC

I saw the 9-5 3 litre, looked very boring, in fact I'm off saabs now. I've widened my horizons and for tree kay there are some 'mazin cars. Skoda Octavia RS.... oof, as John Shuttleworth would say

What's wrong with a Subaru Legacy? Good looking, pretty reliable and not boring.
