Helping a mate out, I ordered up a starter motor that had failed (he has no internet), anyway, in my foolishness, I also offered to fit it for him.

BIG MISTAKE! Disconnected the battery, fitter the starter, no problems, doddle. Problem comes when reconnecting battery. Imobilizer freaks out, flashing red light on dash, flashing of headlamps.

Put the code in, keypad goes green (code accepted), but the alarm condition remains. Tried leaving it, ignition on, ignition off, battery off. No change..

Currently battery is disconnected overnight, and on charge. Will try again. Mate needs his car for work :-(

HELP!

Small update on this.

Charged the battery overnight, fitted it, no difference, headlights still flashing for a minute or so and alarm indicator on the dash still permently flashing.

What intriueged me, was that the keycode went from red to green, so as a punt, tried to bump start it, the car runs. So it's clearly no imobilising the engine.

I am now wondering if the this is all one big red herring, and the starter motor was never faulty, it was always an alarm/imobilizer fault. (I didn't diagnose the starter motor BTW, as I would have connected the starter solenoid ignitition pin to the battery to see if it fired).

Anyone know what the alarm/imobilizer inhibits on thee cars? If it was imobilized, would it bump start? (I would hope not, as that's a bit crap), so it all seems very odd.

I have always cursed the French, but not as much as I currently am.

Just to follow this up, if anyone else gets caught out by one of these French POS, here is what I gleaned.

Fixing his remote keyfob was the key literally (thankfully I am handy with a soldering iron)....

Upon doing so, I could clear the alarm state (that got triggered by disconnecting the battery), When the alarm is slowly flashing, you can click the doors to unlock, and then quickly enter the code and start. Voilla, everything cleared, the starter turned and the car started.

The starter motor was actually faulty, So it seems that the alarm and imobiliser are totally seperate, the imobilizer cuts out the fuel pump until the correct code is entered on the keypad crap, and at that point it's bump-startable. The alarm however can't be cleared by anything but the radio keyfob, and that imoblizes the starter motor circuit too (why bother when it can be bumped...?)

Those crazy French.... Really anyone buying a French car deserves this aggro, I certainly won't be offering him (or any other French car owner) a hand, I learned my lesson today, RUN A MILE.... Hope this helps someone else out.
