2001 VW Golf TDI IV Diesel - Garage says oil plug is stuck - VW_Mark

Hello,

I took my car into the French equivalent of Kwik Fit (I recenttly moved to France) to get the oil changed and they have told me there is no way they can remove the oil plug to replace the oil because the plug is stuck.

They told me to take it to a VW dealership, but I am puzzled why (and they did not speakl enough english to be able to explain why) because the last oil change according to the service history was just at a generic garage.

I am quite worried now this might not be fixable if a garage has sent me away saying they cannot do anything - and I've only had the car 3 weeks!

Could the garage just be incompetent and I need to try again elsewhere? Or some special tool is needed for oil chanegs they do not have (but why would they not have it if they advertise being able to do oil changes, a VW golf is a standard car many people have!)?

Thanks,

Mark

Someone has probably overtightened the plug and they have visions of stripped threads or a broken bolt, and they don't want the hassle, possibly they plug is chewed or shows signs of abuse.

Choice is yours, main dealer or a competent indy or have ago yourself (buy new plug first), if the threads strip out a good indy might put a helicoil in for you, main dealer will probably fit a new sump.

ok thanks a lot - thats put my mind at rest it is fixable! I thought it ought to be.

Now I just need to try to explain this in French to a mechanic...

Sounds like they were prety incompetent. Should think almost every garage has come accross a rounded off sump plug at some time. A competent garage should have it out in five minutes. Worst case scenario is that they will have to drill it out & fit a hellicoil insert & new plug, About 1/2 hours work, if that.

hmm perhaps - I think I won't go back there again for anything.

Some friends said they can recommend an independent garage that speaks basic english, so sounds like taking it there is my best bet.

Well, an obvious temporary workaround would be to go somewhere that uses one of those suction devices that removes the old oil via the dipstick tube. It's entirely possible that it's been done this way in the past (I believe it's the norm with dealer servicing these days) and that the sump plug has not been removed for some considerable time, which may well be why it's stuck.

Longer term, shifting the stuck plug is going to be a pain. If it's really well jammed, it's quite possible to strip the threads or thoroughly round the end of the plug[1] even when care is used, which will mean removing the sump (and potentially replacing it) to solve the problem.

[1] If those lads really are like Kwik Fit, it's probably well rounded by now......

Ah - perhaps this why they were telling me to take it to a VW dealer then.
