Hi,
My aircon stopped working suddenly, had the gas checked and all fine. The small bolt in the front of the compressor is not turning when the engine running.

Could this be an electrical problem or is it definitely a mechanical failure of the compressor.

The a/c pumps on these are direct drive.There is no electro-magnetic clutch coupling.If the centre is not rotating,then it is very possible that the internal drive has broken and a replacement compressor is required.Also,are you sure you are looking at the correct compressor,as there is one on the air intake for the induction system?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, when in front of the engine i was looking at the bottom right of the engine. Looked like the aircon pipes went to it and needed a mirror to actually see the centre bolt. £1400 quote from a dealer, happy days

Out of interest if the compressor doesnt have a clutch and is permantly spinning (when working) how does the air con turn off.

Found a very helpful guy in Dartford but a fair way from me, anybody know any good air con people in the Bromley Kent (BR4) area.

£1400 to fix this !! They are joking.A good indy a/c specialist should be able to do this for around half this price.As there is no clutch on these.the a/c system is controlled by an electronic valve within the compressor.Sorry,can't help with any techie in your area.hth

why not try a complete unit from a scrapyard could be a lot cheaper.

or even e-spares or ebay?

Hi, Have now had my aircon fixed under a mechanical breakdown policy. The fix was to just change to front pulley.
Seems to pump is fine, any ideas what may have caused the pulley to be the problem.
