Problem is getting worse. When I drive over bumps or corner there is knocking under front nearside, sometimes it's back nearside! When I asked a garage that had serviced and repaired it what it was - they said ,after I had paid their bill and after they further put it up on ramp that they didn't know cause, you might think "some garage" and maybe I should find another. In the meantime I am stuck with finding the problem. It could be dangerous and needs sorting. Does anyone have any ideas.

The most likely cause is worn anti roll bar drop links, its difficult to find movement in them when still attached. They are not expensive or difficult to fit - usually!

Go to a garage that does MOT's and ask them to check it over. Hopefully such a garage should be more competent than the clowns you have used previously.

Hi - had the anti roll bar drop links replaced today, but that's not it, knocking comes from under rear nearside - any more ideas anyone please.

I'm surprised. It could possibly be the anti roll bar bushes but unless its done a high mileage unlikely. Are there any particular conditions that bring about this knocking?

Hi finally sorted my annoying knocking noise in my c4 2006 1.6 hdi.

Was coming from under bonnet area going over bumps sounded like drop links were worn so replaced but noise still there. Done all usual checks on suspension nothing obvious.

Swapped over n/s strut as had a spare still the same. So took off the engine undertray got a lever on lower engine mounting and finally replicated the noise it was just a very slightly lose battery support tray! Tightened up the two securing bolts and that sorted it at last!
