Fuel storage legal question - RT

Is it legal to store diesel in a 5 litre can marked petrol?

I'd never store petrol in a diesel can as the flammable vapours might catch out the unwary, or even me if I forget it's there - but I need to take 2x 5 litre diesel on a long journey for reserve purposes but only have petrol containers to hand.

I think it illegal to carry more than 5 litres of fuel in a can in a car anyway so your stuck on that one anyway.

Might not be illegal but a bit foolish unless you've only doing just for a one off. For the sake of spending £5 on a fuel can, what are you trying to achieve ?

As its a one off anyway, who would catch you ?

My understanding is that 1x 10 litre steel container or 2x 5 litre plastic containers are permitted - but I take your other points.

I think that is probably correct as the older petroleum regs maximum amount was 2 gallons. I'd just relable the can - one of mine says "Paraffin" as that is what I keep in it.

Get a large black felt tipped marker pen - problem sorted!

A quick google suggests you can store up to two ten litre metal or two five litre plastic containers of petrol and 100 litres of diesel.

Large letters saying 'DIESEL' should suffice. What's the chance of local plod being au fait with the rules?
