I had one of these and that fault - it was the failure of the electronic module which prevents you shifting without your foot on the brake.

You need it replaced/repaired (I have a feeling it was a known fault at the time), but I'm sure there was a work around by lifting the rubber boot around the shift and prodding it with a biro or similar.
