Automatic Car Help Needed Please - jamie2012

Hi All

Hoping for some help to keep a long story short i needed to be driving as i have a new job coming up in a few months, after 15 manual lesson and still stalling, i went for automatic and was so much easyier and was better for me as i didnt have 6 months plus to wait around. now i have to find a good automatic for my budget which atm is only 1000 maybe can take it to 2000 if it was worth paying the extra for a first car, i did research and most people say go for japanese cars avoid the european automatics but a lot of them cars are not in my price range has any one got any suggestions for me ??

Thank you very much for taking time to read and any helpful comments i will be very grateful

Doesn't matter what you buy in that price range as it will be pot luck. Suggest you take someone with you who has driven automatics for some time so they can give it a good test drive.

Korean could be a good buy, especially something a bit unfashionable, proper autos.

Much depends on the previous ownership, treatment and maintenance regime.

Don't be dogmatic about avoiding European automatics - most of them use automatic gearboxes from Aisin (Toyota), Jatco (Nissan) or Honda.

The Tacuma could well be a reasonable buy, subject to checking out the car is sound, thats the sort of thing i had in mind yes.

Focus i know nothing about, but seeing how Ford have reacted to the ongoing problems with the C-Max's awful auto i wouldn't buy any of their overrated offerings.

For the record the 1996 Proton 1.5 auto that has been passed throughout our family is still chugging along. The auto gearbox is probably one of the only parts that still works, and has never been serviced.

done a search on auto trader for toyota corolla autos in this price range, there seem to be plenty, i would pick the best of these

Thanks again for all the tips

i will check out the toyota corolla sounds good

Corolla would be a good starting point. I'd only add that the Kia Rio might be worth a look, not many about but with the long warranty many private owners tend to keep then well serviced.

You will not get a Kia Rio Auto for £1000 with a long warranty, it was not introduced on that model until Jan 2010.

Focus 1.6 auto is CVT, avoid.

You don't say how old you are, but as an inexperienced driver, I'd recommend you do an online insurance quote before setting your heart on a particular model. Autos often come with the larger engine options in any range and can equal higher premiums.

Automatic Car Help Needed Please - jamie2012

thunderbird how come you say avoid cvt ??

thanks chris and im 24 and yes you were right 1.6 would add £400-£600 on my insurance per year

what do u think about toyota yaris 1.3 used if i tryed to increase my budget ???

and there is a lot of volkswagen autos are they any good ?

its hard choosing a low priced auto as i need small engine, economical car but then people say stay away from smaller autos as there not very good i guess thats the price i pay for not driving a manual ;-(

Ford CVTs = expensive problems.. Search on this site..

Design problems.. ...Runaway.

Yaris 1.3 Mark 1 used a nice relaible auto box quite acceptable and relaible. BUT

AVOID MMT and FREETRONIC : they are unreliable pieces of junk.
