Mazda 5 2010 - Annual Mileage estimate - shreeneewas
I recently bought my first car (thanks for invaluable advice given on backroom forum). I have two questions
===
  • Annual Mileage Estimate on insurance quote.
While applying for insurance I gave my estimate on annual mileage of my car. But now just after 1 month, I think I was too conservative in my estimate and actual value could be way off from my estimate.

  1. How will it affect my renewal ?
  2. Should I give my new estimate ? My new number would be 2K more than what I mentioned earlier.
  • Pass Plus

I will be finishing my pass plus this weekend. I am am insured with Admiral along with my wife. She does not have pass plus. We both are first time driver in this country.

Will this help me to bring down my insurance? Shrini

How many miles did you tell them first of all? The difference for the mileage is peanuts, the admin fee will be a lot more, yes tell them about pass plus at renewal, but search the internet and then arm yourself with the lowest like for like quote and negotiate.

An estimate, is just that - an estimate - it's not a declared upper limit - provided you made the original estimate honestly then I don't see that affecting this year's policy - in practice any estimate under 12,000 miles/year would get the same premium anyway, apart from classic car policies which often have an agreed limit (not estimate) of say 3,000 miles.

Pass Plus doesn't even factor in to your quote; my husband has Pass Plus and he got £40 off once, and it's never made a difference again, even on the odd occasion he's had the opportunity to mention it. I wouldn't bother changing details; avoid getting stung with the admin fee. You make a mileage estimate in good faith. One year you might be under, another you'll be a little over. 2k will make no difference.

Did they ask the mileage on the car when you insured it. If not how will they know how many miles you have done unless you tell them.

If its a new car ignore the above, its easy to tell since at first registration it should ahve done delivery mileage only.

Before the Mrs got a new job she did about 8000 miles a year. The new job involved a longer commute, we guessed her anual mileage would increase to 12 or 13K. Spoke to the insurance company, no charge to increase from 8 to 16K.

In truth is it worth the risk to find the insurance company try an get out of paying out if you need to claim, they are notorious for it.
