I got this email today. It may be genuine but looks like a scam to me. I can't believe that people who have worked on a project for 21 years can know so little about industry contacts. Sorry it's a bit long.

I've removed the return email address to discourage any Back-Roomers from getting involved! ...

Sub: Seeking Advice-Road Accidents !!!

Dear Sir/ Madam,

We are a team of qualified registered medical practitioners holding qualifications recognized by Medical Council of our country.

We have devised a set of systems, which can reduce the damage caused to vehicles and deaths and injury caused to Passengers and Pedestrians in vehicular accidents by more than SEVENTY-FIVE PERCENT.

We have been working on this project for more than TWENTY-ONE years and after years of pain-staking effort & continuous improvement; finally we have been able to achieve a breakthrough a few months back.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT that our set of systems are new and innovative. Moreover, we are very confident and very sure that this will help reducing/minimizing human suffering to a very large extent. There is no doubt that the product devised by us will change the face of the earth forever.

This project has the potential of considerably reducing human trauma and misery and also saving substantial amounts of money by way of damage to property etc.

As we are all aware, Road Accidents are killing more than 3000 persons per day, injuring more than 1,00,000 persons per day and causing a loss of 2 Billion US$ per day.

We believe that you are actively associated with the matters relating to Travel, Safety, Injuries, Research etc and other similar related matters.

We will be grateful if you kindly advice us as to how we should introduce our set of systems into day to day use at the earliest.

Please let us know whether you can refer or advice us about any one and/or more of the following persons and/or Agencies :

01. Research centres, Universities, Academics and Researchers who can help us in increasing the efficacy of our system.

02. Social, Charitable, Philanthropic and other organizations who can actively participate to ensure quicker implementation of the system.

03. Agencies, Institutions, Laboratories or Universities which could provide grants so as to further research and development of such systems.

04. Publicity and public relations services which could help in increasing awareness about the availability of such systems and their early introduction.

05. Business Consultants and Advisors who could arrange Financial, Technical and/or Commercial Collaborations.

06. Licensing and Technology Transfer Advisors including Venture Capitalists, Automobile Manufacturers etc.

Please let us know whether you and any of your business associates are in a position to provide us with such advice.

Also, we can associate with any person anywhere in the world for implementing this project.

We are available at the following contact point:

*******@****.com

In case you are in a position to provide us with advice on the above named matters, or are interested in any further dialogue please contact us for further details. We can then give you address of our websites and further information.

In case, you feel that some of your friends, acquaintances and associates could be interested and/or helpful in our project aimed at human welfare, kindly forward our mail to them.
Hoping to hear from you.

With Best Wishes for the New Year and Kind Regards,

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

ROAD SAFETY ALLIANCE

Personally, I discard most emails that contain shouting.

"..killing more than 3000 persons per day" sounds a bit of an exaggeration, too - I know driving standards can be a lot worse elsewhere, but even so!

All the same, it seems a strange way to implement a scam, and the odd phraseology may be just a translation problem. I wonder who's been funding them for the last 21 years?

At some point, either now or a few emails down the line, money or credit-card details will be asked for. IMHO

It reads like a chain letter. The same vacuous heart felt but content free bovine excrement. I suspect these people get off on seeing their email go round the world.

However, given that they include an email address, it could be an elaborate way to get revenge on someone, by ensuring that their email account gets deluged with emails.

All in all there is a faintly unpleasant whiff hovering around it. A bit like me after a good run.

"injuring more than 1,00,000"

For reasons too deep to go into, this way of numbering suggests that this has come from either: India, which is an unusual place for a scam, or Pakistan, in which case I'd be suspicious.

I don't know your background, Ian, so you need to judge if their reason for choosing you for this email makes sense. What I mean is, are you a sensible choice for someone with a good idea from outside the country to try to get motor industry contact details from? They might be naive in their claims and in their method of trying to get details of people in the trade interested, but equally they might have a useful idea.

Why not forward it to the TRL and see if they are interested in following it up?

Yes, definitely of Indian or Pakistani origin. The style of English gives it away and the method of writing 1,00,000 is the clincher.

Bin it, and request Mark by e-mail to delete this whole thread as it wastes HJ's resources.

PS. If your e-mail message was in an attachment, give your PC a thorugh virus check. Now! Pronto!

It reads like the Nigerian money-laundering letters.

I believe that the police have a unit dealing with these scams, I'll probably forward it to a contact.

Whatever you do, don't respond.
