any - sorn problem - catsdad

My son is trying to SORN his car which is still insured (to the end of the week) and taxed but he will cash that in. Both on-line and automated DVLA systems refuse to accept his data. All we can think is that the V5 which is only 2 years old is still the old blue type - although DVLA site says they are still valid. I have searched the Web for SORN issues and none cover the problem we have. Any ideas gratefully accepted. If all else fails we will call DVLA on Monday. A bit trying as if it takes time to resolve it will be uninsured.

He needs to download form V890 from the DVLA website. Fill in the form & send off with the tax disc attached & he will reveive his refund in a few weeks.

Don't think you can sorn'd while there is valid tax on the vehicle so it needs to be done in conjunction with the claiming the tax back. This will mean offline in paper forms through post office or normal mail.

Correct. Get a form from the post office, fill it in ensuring you tick the SORN box, attach tax disk to form and post. A refund will arrive in a few weeks (only for full months) and a letter confirming SORN will also be sent. Keep it safe. It will need to be renewed in 12 months if you don't re-tax the car.

Thanks for the replies. I can't believe how obscure the dvla site makes this as it must be a common occurence. Been down to the post office and although the counter was closed the appropriate V14 form was on the side to pick up. Having read the form we may now simply scrap the car to a scrap dealer on the v5 and use the V14 to claim the tax and avoid sorn altogether. DVLA site could do with a flow chart to guide the options and their online should tell you why it won't accept the request. Thanks again
