I had a question about SORN stating an understanding that even though off road and untaxed a car still had to be insured. I can't understand why this might be, any ideas?

If your car is on a SORN it does not need to be insured.

Thanks I didn't think it made any sense

Depending on how much it's worth it might be an idea to have it covered against theft.

And fire should the garage ignite.

I too have heard that it is required to have off-road insurance - to cover the risk of the vehicle causing damage to property. Some sites make it a legal requirement to have insurance - MOD, Forestry Commission, local authorities and others... -if nothing else from the fire risk. There is an insurance company set up to cover the SORN. There has been argument as to whether there should be a charge to have a SORN and that forcing an owner to have insurance permanantly during ownership -even during a sorn would be a good encouragement to getting more vehicles scrapped. The green lobby would like to see all private vehicles taken out.

If the car is SORN'd then there's no legal requirement for it to be insured under the Road Traffic Act. If it's valuable you may want to protect your 'investment' by insuring against fire and theft.

Whether there's a civil/contractual requirement for insurance against fire and knock on loss at a storage site or if used off road for rallying is a different question.

Methinks two different meanings to the phrase "off road" happenging here.

Off Road as above - forrest, MOD I take to be mudplugging or the like. Yes, tax and insurance generally needed unless really private land with NO public access.

Off Road as in the SORN requirement - parked up off the public highway.
