Went to a hyundai dealer this morning to look at an i40, was told i needed to make an appointment, giving 2 days notice, to have a test drive and that the test drive would be limited to 15 minutes.

Called hyundai, and retail customers are limited to a 15 minute test drive.......

Unlike Ford and Vauxhall who sell more "nearly new" cars than new ones in the non-fleet sector, demand for brand-new Hyundai cars is so high that dealers minimise the numbers of demonstrators available for use as they can only be sold as nearly new, not new ones.

It does make it more difficult but Hyundai doesn't like doing things the same way as the rest - that's why they overtook Ford in world-wide cars sales in 2009 and now closing in on the top three.

Nonsense, when we last bought we liked the Hyundai ix35. Dealer lent us one for 2 hours solo test drive without being pushed, never asked for ID or driving licence etc. Didn't buy, 6 month wait.

Went to Kia, same routine, 2 hour solo test drive, only 2 month wait.

Things must have changed.

Hyundai group compared to Ford badged vehicles still a remarkable growth story.

Here in Germany both the Hyundai and Kia dealer offered a 24 hour test.

Hyundai + Kia sold more cars in 2009 and 2010 compared to Ford + Mercury + Lincoln + Volvo but excluding their interest in Mazda, Aston Martin.

Ford's commercial vehicle sales keep them in 4th spot of world vehicle makers as Hyundai-Kia have much smaller sales there.

It's not totally nonsense. When I bought my Santa Fe in 2010, it took forever and a day to get a test drive (well about 2 weeks). It seems that there was one vehicle that did the rounds of the local dealers. If Hyundai want to sell more cars then they should really have demonstrators available. If however they are at a level they are happy with, then I guess there is no need to change what they are doing.

I saw an i40 on the forecourt of the local dealer earlier this week and was surprised that it was over £26k. Isn't that a bit expensive?

Hyundai certainly want to sell cars - and are successful at that despite difficulties for some buyers.

Hyundai are moving on from cheap !!

They are indeed: anyone thinking about an i40 - particularly if they are refused a proper test drive - should go to a Skoda dealer and look at an Octavia. I can see nothing that a i40 can do that an Octavia can't - and the Octavia is cheaper.

Strangely, the i10 is still a bargain, particuarly as dealers are offering good discounts on them. It's been around for a few years and I suspect that when it's replaced by a new model, prices will go up.

Hyundai-Kia Group have the Kia models to compete against Skoda - they don't need two brands to do so - the Hyundai brand is on the move.

Fair point - but if Hyundai are trying to move upmarket they need to make that apparent to the customer. It isn't apparent to me, and as the i40 is a new model it ought to be.

Interestingly, Kias are no longer cheap either. The cheapest Ceed (list price) is over £14,000 and the top of the range model is over £23,000: £23,595 to be precise.. Think what you can get for that - an upmarket Audi A3 or VW Golf, or a basic A4 for example or a mid-range BMW 1-series. All of these will hold their value better than a Ceed, despite the Ceed's 7-year warranty.

You can get a 2.0L Bluemotion VW Scirocco for about £23k. That would definitely hold its value better than any Kia.

i wish I would have followed my head instead of my heart when acquiring my i40 Premium Tourer as my company car.

The fuel economy is horrendous, I'd need a diesel pump attached the back, but then again, the extra weight would only make the car drink more fuel!!!

The combined cycle quoted is 55.4mpg - i'm lucky if I get 40mpg.

Now I would expect a reduction of maybe 10-15% (which would give me 49.5 - 46.8mpg) and I could live with that, but not a reduction of nearly 30%

I should have bought a VW Passat 2.0TDi Bluemotion Tech, and now i'm stuck with this care for another 3 years and 7 months (yes I AM counting!!!)

Hyundai i40 - Test drive - RT

Your expectations were unrealistic.

HJ's Real MPG data www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/hyundai/i40-tourer-20...1 shows that 45.4 mpg is the average for this car - but not everyone is average, some better, some worse.

The same database www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/volkswagen/passat-2011 gives 46.3 mpg for the VW Passat 2.0TDi Bluemotion Tech Estate.

Not a lot of difference !!

perhaps my expectations were unrealistic, but if we lived in the States we'd be getting our money back on the fuel we've used.....

You would get the difference between the original mileage rating and the revised mileage rating, based on the mileage driven.

Yes. Not quite the same as carmakers reimbursing every disappointed driver. Some people's inability to understand clearly presented facts doesn't inspire confidence in their ability to drive a car.

Not that the stupidity is confined to laymen. The Sunday Times "in gear" supplement declared that the relative price of fuel had declined since 1970 based solely upon the official fuel economy standards. It then stated that the official fuel economy standards were not a reliable indication of real world consumption. Which undermined the entire article. Doh!

Hyundai i40 - Test drive - dissapointedinhyundai

driving close to 30,000 miles a year would certainly begin to add up though wouldn't it?....

Hmm, the Skoda Octavia 20v Turbo 4x4 I ordered while in CZ produced the following exchange with a local colleague:

"What the heck did you get that for? The fuel consumption's terrible!"

"Er, company fuel card..........?"

"Good point. Wish I'd thought of that when ordering mine...."
