Vauxhall Astra MK4 2001 1.8L - Urgent! Help Needed With Engine Management Light - SomeoneElse
Hello,

A new problem has arisen with my Vauxhall Astra MK4 2001. I started it this morning as normal, it idled horribly and erratic. I drove about 20ft and the car stalled. After restarting it, I drove back onto my drive, and the acceleration was minimal at times and then erratic again. Once I had restarted the car, I realised the engine management light was on, and then the traction control light came on a short while afterward.

Since this has happened, I disconnected the battery for a few minutes to reset the cars computer, seeing as though the erratic idleing had stopped, to see if that fixed the problem. The traction control light has gone off, but the engine management light has stayed on.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

You need to get the codes read - it'll store them in the ECU - Vauxhall dealers are expensive just to plug their computer in but plenty of independents can do it much more cheaply or you can buy hand-held diagnostic readers which aren't expensive.

I manually read the codes using a trick I know. The following results have shown up..

P0170 - Rich/Lean Exhaust c-30
P0100 - Mass or volume air flow circuit high/low input c-10

does this help in any way with helping with my problem? I did notice over the past week that the cars idleing has become rather erratic. High RPM when idleing, the exhaust chugs a bit, a bit of vibration, then calms down after 10 seconds??

Thank you for your reply.

Unplug the MAF tro see if the hunting problem goes. If it does then you probably need to clean/replace the MAF.

Ok Ill try that, where is the MAF located and what would you recommend cleaning it with? Thanks for your reply.

I was able to find the MAF, between the Filter Box and the Throttle body, Ive taken that out and given it a general clean. The idleing erraticly has definetly stopped now, but the engine management light stays on? Is this because I need the codes wiped from the ECU now?
