citroen c4 2.0 automatic - hallington

I have just bought a car, which I had test driven twice and noticed no problems. But when I collected it today, whilst idling in traffic in drive, on the flat, I pressd down on the accelerator to start going again and it started reversing! The first seems really sluggish full stop, the dealer said it sounds like a faulty switch pack and will replace it on saturday. I'm praying this is the problem? The only way I could stop it reversing, was to switch off the car and restart, thank god I didn't have an accident :(

Oh dear - is that a full automatic or one of those satanic semi-automatics?

I love Citroens but this model must rank as one of the worst ever to come out of a PAS plant I wish the OP all the luck in the world.

I love proper automatics and am currently getting used to a CVT. Last year I had the use over several days of a nearly new Citroen C5 and a Peugeot 5008 with the automated manual boxes. They were awful and at times dangerous, passenger and myself felt seasick due to the movement of the car created by the gear changes. Sorry it doesn't help your problem but adds to the experience view and if anyone is considering one don't just have a short road test.

C5 and 5008 have completely different gearboxes to the C4 of the OP, I would revue your driving tecnique as the ones in the C5 and the 5008 are lovely and smooth you do not seem to understand the different types of autobox..

Collos, I didn't say they were the same gearboxes but inferred they were from the same manufacturing stable. My point is that having driven both for several days they were awful compared to any other automatics I have driven. Having driven and owned many cars of various sizes with standard auto boxes over many years I am simply pointing out that, in my opinion, the drive of both the C5 and and the 5008 were awful in comparison. I don't expect you or anyone else to believe me it was just my opinion, as it is your opinion they are "lovely and smooth", which is your opinion and one that I don't agree with. This forum is full of people's opinions most of which are asked for so that people can gain information from the knowledge and/or the experiences of others. Shall we agree to disagree?

It's a pity that Citroen persist with the EGS (Exceptionally Grotty System) in the C4 and Picasso, as my impression is that they have made more progress with quality and reliability than Renault, perhaps even than sister company Peugeot.

This gearbox is jerky and unreliable (correct me someone if I'm wrong but I don't think it's dual-clutch like the VW Group's DSG), and I can't see what advantage it's supposed to have over a manual or an automatic - unless I suppose if you love changing gear and don't have the use of your left foot.

Anyone care to defend this gearbox? Meanwhile, Halllington, as Sir Humphrey used to say in Yes, Minister - you're very courageous.
