Can someone clarify for me how long points stay on your licence for. In July 2008 I got 3 pionts for going thru a red light. In March 2009 another 3 points for doing 63mph in a 60 limit (speed camera). I thought it was 3 years but I am being told by a friend it is 4 years.Reason for asking as haven driven thru the average speed camera on the M90 from Perth to Glasgow on almost a daily basis since they started at 40mph - went thru one section on Tuesday at around 50mph I reckon, so am expecting a letter.

Both you and your friend are correct.

Points on your licence count towards "totting-up" for 3 years - they stay on your licence for 4 years to accomodate courts' inefficiencies - and insurers usually ask about any convictions in the last 5 years.

There are exceptions, drink-driving stays on for 10 years and I believe that causing death by dangerous driving does as well.

Glad someone has sorted that one out - I got three points in May 2009 (in an XC90!) and was wondering the same as I am about to change insurers and wondered if I needed to tell them!

Point for 63 in a 60 is harsh. Really harsh. You wouldn't even be stopped by a BIB for that...

Have you seen the Motoring section in Saturday's Daily Telegraph...?

Apparently a lot more people are being done for tiny infractions.

Wrong arm of the law

One of my neighbours received a fixed penalty for driving at 32mph in a 30 limit. Another received a Thames Valley Police fine for stopping in a disabled parking bay at 9pm, not exactly rush hour, to collect a blind, 80-year-old lady who does not think it appropriate to have a blue badge because she does not drive. Things like this harm the public's attitude to the police. I'm sure most people do not intend to speed, but drifting fractionally over the speed limit is hardly a cardinal sin. The alternative, I suppose, is to watch the speedo rather than the road and risk crashing into the car ahead.

I have alse heard elsewhere of 62 in a 60 being penalised. What happened to the recently relaxed ACPO guidelines, which are only guidelines and not binding

We all need to accept that 61 in a 60 is illegal any any concession is just that, a concession.

There's no excuse as EVERY speedometer is required to over-read so it's not like driver don't know what speed they're doing - assuming they look at the thing.

This isn't righteous preaching - I've been caught but you just have to accept the penalty and get on with life.
