VW Polo 2002 1.4 Auto - Sparodic Starting Issue - Almost Starts - LizzInOz

Im in Australia, but having no luck with research here......

I recently bought a 2002 VW Polo 1.4 Automatic.

Absolutely immaculate car with full log books and 64,000 kms, but

Every 30 or so starts, when I turn the key it ALMOSTS starts, but just doesnt kick over.

After waiting about 2 minutes in between goes, and about 4 more tries It eventually starts.

It doesnt seem too major, but I would like to know what it could possibly be and get it sorted now, before it does become a more regular occurence!

Somebody did tell me that maybe the battery in my key is playing up?

Thanks for any advice!

I would check condition of battery and associated terminals and leads to starter motor, including the engine earth lead. The battery in the key plays no part in the starting or running of the car.hth

"but just doesn't kick over." what exactly do you mean, does it not turn over at all. Does the pre engage starter solenoid click. Regards Peter

It does all its supposed to do when starting, even that click but it just doesnt get to the final stage of actually staying on.

It does sound like the battery could be a dodgy connection, considering its not all the time.

I get that engine turning sound that you would normally hear when starting the car, but because it doesnt engage , if someone is standing nearby (like the other day a guy said sounds like your battery is dying) but its not and starts fine any other day!

I might check the connections, the roads here in Australia are full of potholes, maybe they are dislodging the connection every now and then!
