BMW 1 Series Coupe - DVLA Potential Issue or Not? - SameGame101

Hi All,

Would really appreciate some help in the following scenario I have found myself in, thanks in advance!

I recently purchased a car privately (paid in cash) from someone who lives locally to me in North London. A month later, I realised that I had not received the logbook and sent my portion of the logbook and subsequently received a new logbook with my name as the registered owner.

However, upon receiving the logbook, I noticed that the previous registered owner was not the person I bought the car from, but of another name of someone in Cardiff. I am 100% sure that the logbook that I saw upon inspection of the vehicle had the name of the person I was buying from. However when querying this with DVLA, they had no record of this name. The logbook I saw was inspected thoroughly and there was a watermark which indicates that it was an original. The car was also HPI checked and no issues came up.

I have subsequently raised this with the DVLA and the police who have informed me that there are no issues with the car, no fines etc... and it has not been reported as stolen.

I was wondering if you could shed some light into how this may have happened.

Thanks

Why not ask whoever you bought the car from?

Unfortunately I am unable to contact him as his line in dead (possibly was using a temporary number) - I am tempted to go to his address but would like to see if anyone can offer any realistic plausible explanations on here before I jump the gun accusing people.

Hi ,check the car very thoroughly, to make sure it is the car that you have the registration document for .

Check the vin numbers imprinted into the bodywork as well as the engine number if possible .If these all match the v5 ,registration document ,then the likely conclusion is that you were mistaken in the name you thought was on the reg doc.

Thanks for your message. I will do this.

To add further suspicion, I have just searched the number plate on google and come across this:

docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:Ib_eYpw5Iqc...w

It is a spec sheet for my car which says 41k miles, whereas my car shows 15k miles. The car pictured also has IDrive in the picture, whereas my car does not.

Any idea?

Site/PC playing up again.

Did the Police only check the VRM against their records on PNC or did they do a physical
inspection of the vehicle including the engine/chassis number to see if they have been
doctored
If they did and all OK then chances you made a mistake.

I went to the police only to check it was all overboard, police reckon it is.

I called the garage, who said they had a car of the same model and engine, which the same VIN chassis numbers etc... which they had sold in the last few weeks (not to me.)

Very worried I have a cloned car. The HPI checks came out all clear but they are only confirming the legitimate car is all clear, however the car I may have on my driveway is an illegitimate car with the same numberplate illegally put on and the VIN numbers all changed. Is this possible?

Thanks for everyones help - much appreciated.

Also - just to clarify police did not conduct a physical inspection of the car

If the VIN and registration number match it will come back as genuine but it can still be cloned.

That is the problem with an HPI check, OK it tells you if the vehicle with the VIN/reg number has been involved in an accident or has money owing but it does not prove its the vehicle you are looking at.

Cars generally have the VIN stamped in places it is difficult to change, have you taken it to a BMW dealer to check this?

No I haven't taken it to a BMW dealer. The police are coming round this evening to take a look at the car. I will let you know what happens.

At this stage I have to be looking at worst case scenario planning. If the car does turn out to be stolen/cloned, then what are my options? WIll I enevitably lose my car and my money without any compensation?

Police say its fine - keep it sell it do what I like with it, they have confirmed that it is a legitimate car and confirmed I will not be liable once sold.
