Volkswagen Golf - New tyre valves needed for winter tyre change? - Automobilist

I bought winter tyres for the first time last winter, from Kwikfit and used their "tyre hotel" storage service for my summer tyres. On arranging to swap back to the summer tyres via their website, I find it is impossible to avoid being charged for a new set of valves, at a price of £19, even though I do not want them, as I did buy new valves when I bought the new winter tyres only last December. This is a second car and had only done about 1700 miles since the previous tyre change. I phoned Kwikfit and spoke to the Customer Services Manager, but he was adamant that the company policy is to always fit new valves at every tyre change and insisted they must fit new valves. At this rate, I will be forced to pay an additional £38 every year for valves I think I don't need. I think this is unreasonable. What is your opinion? (In order to get my tyres back I have already paid the extra £19)

New valves are totally unnessary but if its company policy to replace them under the starage scheme you are stuffed. Fit new valves with new tyres is the normal sensible recommendation.

Take the tyres home and get a local independant to change them.

I would not trust Kwik Fit to store my tyres. you will probably find some 17 year old hooning on them at the weekend.

could have sworn i answered this earlier, either i'm losing the plot, probably, or its vanished, never mind.

During the year find yourself a set of cheap used half presentable alloys from ebay/gumtree etc and get your winters permanently fitted.

This has the added bonus of your nice wheels never seeing salt.

I did see that, this winter, there were a couple of web sites offering winter tyres ready fitted to German-made (KFZ) steel wheels to fit most cars. That's a possible option.

Many years ago, mt eldest son went on a works experience course at Kwikfit, he told me that all the old valves that were removed we're burnt to remove the rubber coating and the remaining brass weighed in to get beer money!
Nothing changes, the old scams are best..

Without wishing to be patronising in any way, you don't need to consult a car forum to know that any locked-in deal will be designed for the benefit of the provider and not the user.

Wheels, 'phones, insurance - it's all the same.

The provider you mention does not generally enjoy a good reputation here either.
