HGV Restrictions in outside lane - Balthazar

Just spent 3 days motoring on Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium- all had restrictions on HGV's in the outside lane during daylight hors on their two lane motorways.

What a difference it made and if it can be done in those countries without the World ending then why not here- even if it means raising the speed limit for HGV's.

The only piece of Driving stupidity I saw was the laughable attempt made by a British HGV to overtkae another on the motorway near Calais.

For 10 minutes we were able to laugh as he blocked the road during his attempt to overtake another HGV with his increased speed of around 2mph, saw the lorry on his inside gradually increase his speed and then saw him wait to drop back down to eventually pull in and clear the outside lane.

DUMB AS A BOX OF ROCKS!

'' saw the lorry on his inside gradually increase his speed and then saw him wait to drop back down to eventually pull in and clear the outside lane''.

Yes the driver who accelerated on the overtaking driver was indeed dumb.

Not all autobahns and not all times these vary considerable a sign telling the driver the restrictions is at the side of the autobahn ,but when they are allowed to overtake they have to complete the manouvre in 30secs I believe often there are timing cameras on top of the bridges, and as every HGVhas to buy an electronic toll to use the autobahns they are very easily traced and fined. Also no HGVs on sundays except a very few that carry vital products and these have to have a certificate to allow them to work on a Sunday.

There are more German autobahn police plus ministry police and TUV police than all the police put together in the UK.

Could be something to do with the speed limiters which physically prevent British registered HGVs from exceeding 90 km/h. Fail! Not a problem here in Spain as they are either not fitted or else are "magically" disabled, along with such niceties as tachographs, ahem.

And if I had a Euro for every near death experience involving an HGV driver losing his patience and charging into the THIRD LANE to overtake another in the second lane - right in front of me!... 'nuff said.

Yet one more compelling reason to have proper motorway patrol cars rather than "prosecution by camera", which somehow does not have the desired effect on foreign registered HGVs.

Perhaps someone in the know can explain the logic behind cabs and trailers having different registrations, often from different countries. Spanish trailers have to carry a second black and red registration plate for the trailer (for HGVs and caravans weighing over 750 kgs). So the Polish driver with a Belgian transport firm has a Lithuanian registered cab and a Slovakian trailer and the fine for reckless driving goes to... apparently nobody.

And the truck(s) gets stuck behind the car or car + caravan doing 40mph (or less) causing even longer tailbacks, a full ban would cause utter chaos. However, something along the lines of the 30 second overtake, or maybe the driver being overtaken easing off a little, or not restricting to such a stupidly low speed may be the answer.

Yes, being stuck behind a looooong overtake on a two lane road is frustrating, the A34 springs to mind, but a total ban, I think not!

BTW, I am a car driver, not a trucker, I do believe that i should be compulsary for all car drivers to spend a day with a trucker to experience what they pit up with, especially from the clowns in cars.

Unfortunatly, in the UK, due to massive fuel cost, are restricting their trucks to 49-51mph rather than the 56mph allowed by law. Sainsbury are one of the worst offenders. A complete ban on overtaking means all HGV's are limited to the speed of the slowest truck. And good luck to you when you want to join or pull off of a motorway when all teh trucks are nose to tail at 49mph.

Yes there are overtaking restrictions on the continent, but these only operate over certain stretches and at certain times, with plenty of stretches of road which allow overtaking. What helps most with traffic flow on the continent is CAR drivers not hogging the lanes. Whatch French or German cars, as soon as they are passed they pull back in, leaving the road clear for those behind. Most traffic flow issues in teh UK are caused by those in the middle lane never pulling back in, either because they dont know they supposed to, or because they are to scared, either case they should not be allowed to drive on the M/Way.

Those who stay in the middle lane when lane one is empty should be hung, drawn and quartered in public. If that isn't possible because soft-hearted liberals or the EU/Human Rights lot won't allow it, a life driving ban would do, I suppose.

HGV Restrictions in outside lane - PatrickO

It's just lazy driving.

Also if you need to overtake and indicate for the person behind in lane 2 to move to an empty lane 3, with some of them you'd think you'd just spat at them. I appreciate some people are afraid of lane 3 but some are just too bone idle to check their mirror and move over to help others out.

Indeed, It was on this very road a few months ago where my Skoda Superb dropped into limp home mode allowing me reasonable speed on the flat but dropped below 50mph up the hills which suddenly seemed a lot steeper! A total HGV overtake ban would have been a problem.

However I frequently see a truck just about crawling past a line of trucks on the A1 taking many many miles to complete.

Far worse than middle-lane hogs are: Tailgaters, sudden lane changers, under-takers, in-cutters, slip road bargers-on, and drivers who flout speed limits.

If I can undertake you, you are in the wrong lane,

Generally, I don't have a problem with people flouting speed limits, it's the ones driving well below the limit without good cause that are a problem.

.My main point still remains---for whatever reason HGV's are to often blocking the outside lane on a 2 lane motorway with their overtaking attempts.

I am a professional driver and well aware of the faults of many motorists including myself at times but this issue is not going away.

Include ALL speed restricted vehicles at peak times, If Sainsbury want to run their vehicles at 40mph its their choice but dont let their decision determin my progress on the road.

Consider a 100 mile trip: at 56 mph, this takes 107 minutes and 8.5 seconds

At 55.5 mph, the same distance takes 108 minutes and 6.5 seconds, a difference of under 1 minute.

One red light, one pedestrian crossing or waiting at one roundabout would easily take a minute, so unless the slow overtaker proposes to ignore such delays he is wasting his and everyone else's time.
