Toyota Yaris - Buying from a dealer: 3k price range - mikem004

I have always bought my cars from private sellers.

Following recommendations on this board, I am looking for a Toyota Yaris 2002-2005, up to 3k to spend.

There are very few of these on private sale, and the ones on Auto Trader seem to sell very rapidly.

So, I'm looking to buy from a dealer. The mark up on private prices doesn't seem too bad...

Some questions about buying from a dealer:

* Are the mileages bona fide? That's for a nationwide dealer chain, not an Arthur Daley set up

* Will the dealer reduce the price for cash + bankers cheque? I'm not interested in a finance agreement.

* Will the dealer try to sign me up for some servicing/after-care programme? Again, I'm just not interested for a car this old.

Only if its a lemon, dealer likely to make more on the finance than the straight sale, so IMO less likely to haggle..equally these cars for good reason sell well, no reason to discount, unless its a lemon.

Bought carefully from the right sort of seller and checked out, private is still the best method, and this car is owned by older people, possibly but not always making the business of avoiding scams a little easier.

I prefer ebay classifieds to autotrader, more pictures and more room for a seller to write their car up, which gives the opportunity to appraise the *seller as well as the car before viewing....their ebay feedback whilst not perfect does at least give some indication as to their being real.

*if it waddles and quacks its a duck.

I never thought of trying ebay.

It looks like you pay the seller direct, not via ebay.

I'll add ebay to my current list of used car sites: auto trader + gumtree

ebay auctions might not be for you, but ebay classifieds are just the same as any other advert, you go and view and negotiate.

Take all precautions as you normally would, many traders now advertise there, as well as some small time traders pretending to be private sellers.

I bought my car from a very small dealership. He didn't try and make me have finance either! I just googled 'car dealerships in xxxxx' and looked on Google maps for where they were. Then you can go on their websites and look at their stocklists.
