Hi - I've put deposit down on a new picanto. The car has arrived at the dealership. The dealer says I need to come in and pay the balance, and sign a couple of forms (not entirely clear what these are) and then a couple of days later I can drive the car away. I.e not on the day I have paid the balance. He seemed to suggest this is perfectly normal nowadays, but on my only previous new car purchase,I drove away on the day I paid the balance. Is the delear correct. Not entirely happy with paying the full amount and not driving it away. What happens if it is damaged between the day I paid and the day I pick it up, which due to,work commitments will be about a week? Have their been any changes to how a V5C is completed? E.g dealers won't do this until the balance has been paid?

Thanks for any comments.

Hi Basil, good choice of car. There have been a couple of discussions about this before.

Generally speaking a dealer pays the manufacturer for the car the day it is registered, so he wants your money in his bank by this date, not a cheque awaiting banking then clearing.

Similarly, if you are taking out dealer arranged finance he wants the finance company's money in his bank not some finance docs lying on his desk awaiting collection by the finance rep.

The last car I bought I paid with debit card at collection but whilst I thought this was cleared funds, some say that the dealer does not recieve the money until a couple of days later. Anyone know for certain?

Of course whilst this is normal, so is paying on the day of collection, but this should be agreed at time of order as it is almost certain that the contract (order form) you have signed contains terms to the effect that funds must be cleared prior to collection.

Enjoy your car

Hi thanks for your reply. Sorry didn't do a very thorough search for similar posts. I have just read a similar one re a Hyundai purchase. Maybe it is standard practise for Kia / Hyundai? I am paying via debit card. When I queried the procedure with the dealer he said it was time for funds to clear, but when I said i was paying by debit, he changed to say it was because it took 2 days for the paperwork to come back from head office. So not sure he knows the reason either. Should the car be under my insurance whilst it is sitting at their dealership?

I set up and managed the card facility at a small charity I used to work for. I can confirm that the payee doesn't receive the funds immediately, it does normally take at least couple of days for the cash to credit the payee's (i.e. the dealer's) account. There are various options available for the merchant (i.e. the garage) which enable them to pay less commission but get the money later, if that makes sense. Similarly, it typically takes the same time to be debited the payer's account. When the card is passed thorugh the machine, it will be authorised for payment - that means, there were sufficient funds at the time, and the card passed the validity checks. It's perfectly possible that the cardholder could close the account the next day, so in this case the payee might receive the funds, but they will almost certainly be immediately recalled. Hence the wait.

HTH.

Once the debit card has been verifiied and authorised via the card reader, it's just about impossible to stop the transaction. In most cases, the money is transferred within hours, usually 24 hours max. If it's between accounts in the same bank, it can be immediate.

This gauarantee, and the fact that any charges are minimal or zero, is why car dealers love your debit card.

That's not how it normally works. Cards are processed by a card company (Streamline, Barclays etc.) and it makes no difference if the receiver's bank is the same as the payers. They still all go through the same system and take the same time.

Debit cards normally credit on the 3rd working day, i.e. if you take a card payment on Monday the funds are credited on the Wednesday. If you take a payment at the weekend, it can still take until Wednesday to credit.

Most credit cards are the same except American Express which takes 6 working days to credit - i.e. pay on a Monday and the retailer gets the funds Tuesday week.

When we bought the i30, we paid £500 deposit on the Tusday evening when we test drove it. They prepped the car and rang us on Thursday. We went back on Friday evening, paid the other £9500 via debit card, handed over the V5C and keys of the "swappaged" Almera, and drove the i30 home.

The Mondeo sale was pretty much the same, deposit, prep, payment on collection.

I think I'd want ot be taking the car home. Once it's paid for, it's yours.

The only time I have waited is when paying by cheque. Last two cars I have paid by debit card and driven away the same day.

I drove a Ford Ka (old model) away as soon as the cheque had cleared. I could not drive my VW Up away until they had a replacement as it was the showroom model, which they needed for punters to poke and prod. They might want to prepare the car once the cash has cleared, but that should not take long, not 2 days surely.

An IT contractor I know required a car at short notice. He went round to his local Nissan dealership after work, pointed at a nice, new black Primera GT and said "I want that one now".

The dealer made noises about payment delays, closing up now sir, maybe sometime next week and so on.

One opening of a briefcase full of cash later, a bit of haggling after that and he was driving home in it within 20 minutes. You can keep your debit cards. Nothing produces service from a car dealer like a large quantity of folding money all in one place.......

One opening of a briefcase full of cash later,

I wonder if that is still possible given money laundering legislation?

We're picking a new Hyundai i20 up on Monday - will be paying the balance by credit/debit card, and driving away on Monday.

Hi Thanks for everyone's comments. I spoke to Kia who spoke to the dealership. Apparently it is that franchies's policy not to register cars until full payment has been taken. They don't register cars at the dealership, but at a central office hence the couple of days delay. The Kia spokes person wasnt sure why they would have such a policy. Anyone any ideas?

I'd image that if you don't go ahead with the purchase, they'd be able to keep your deposit and then still sell the car as new. It makes sense really, but then legally I'd think the garage hasn't made a loss, and therefore wether or not they can keep the deposit is another matter.

The new version of the i20 is in showromms on the 7th May....you'll have bought the current model for good reasons, I'm sure - presumably a good bit cheaper than the new one??

The Kappa2 is in the new 1.2...don't know about the 1.4. Better mpg and lower emissions. And hopefully free of transmission problems that have been apparent in the older 1. 2's

KIA Picanto - New car purchase procedure - Auristocrat

Yes - fully aware of the mild facelift. Petrol versions in showrooms 7th May, diesels from June. The Kappa 2 engine provides 7bhp more.

£1250 off car plus £1000 contribution to finance deposit from Hyundai. From Honest John's review and from the i20 forum on the Hyundai Owners Club, transmission problems appear to be few with the i20. Plus in the May edition of Which? the i20 was given the Which? 'great value buy' for the Supermini class.

Our i20 has free road tax for the first year, and £30 per year for the following years (subject to future increases by the Treasury). Well equipped second car - air con, bluetooth, electric windows/mirrors, six air bags, etc.

The Mazda 2 it replaced did 24,900 miles in 4.5 years - so high mileage not a requirement.
